Trash to Treasure!

Fit For A Queen

When I found these at a garage sale, the owner couldn't stop apologizing for the condition of these to side tables. Not only were they filthy but the veneer was just a mess. In fact when I was carrying them to my car, my sister in law was trailing behind picking up the pieces!
What a mess!
First things first. A good cleaning with half vinegar half water solution was in order. Several layers of dirt and a few un happy spiders were removed! Next step remove and or glue damaged veneer. This step is easier then you think. Best and fastest way to remove veneer is to use a hot iron. Glue melts and makes it incredibly easy to scrap up the old veneer. I use a putty knife.
Use a towel instead of ironing on wood
Next step a bit of wood putty to smooth out the bumps, lightly sand when the putty dries. I also use 100 % non toxic, 100 % Voc free Shabby Paints Chalked Paint! Easy to use, no priming! I used a color called Americano and Alamo white. I also used a hazelnut revax to antique the ornate parts to bring out the detail. Last step a top coat of vax, incredibly durable top coat!

I have a question... how do we know when we see an old furniture and figure if it has to be restored to former glory or if there is no value can we paint it? I am wondering because I know there are wonderful antique or vintage ones that are worth value. I am always not getting them because I would not be sure what to do to go about them.

Love to help! I use Shabby paints. They are 100% non toxic, so you can even paint indoors with windows closed. Water based so easy cleanup, easy to use so even a novice can look like a professional. Sounds like some wet distressing would help with showing the wood grain. Pop over to my Facebook page and I can give you a bit more instructions. Take a look at some of my pieces and let me know if you have any questions on how to get the look.
