Cost to upholster yard sale wing back chair?

I found this chair at a yard sale this morning for $15! I love the structure of this chair and it's so comfy. I want to upholster it but I heard it can cost $200-$350 to do that job, is that too high or the average price?

2-300 sounds reasonable in Chicago area. All stuffing needs t/b replaced (dust mites + bunching of stuffing) new foam form for seat),single or double welting,+ 4-5 yds. of fabric.

I just had a smaller wing back that I bought for $20 covered for $395. I thought that was high but it is absolutely beautiful and am glad I did it although I almost choked to death. The cost of the covering did not include the fabric which was not cheap but still glad I did it. I just love the chair and I have not seen that particular style before although I'm sure there are plenty out there. This was in GA.

If the bones of the chair is in very good condition, than the cost to upholstery is doable. What you need to look at is what the chair would cost new. You may want to see how much fabric is needed to cover, and check out fabric stores thAt carry decorating fabric.

Paint the fabric with Ann Sloan chalk paint.

If every else is in great shape with the chair I think you should use fabric paint. It would be considerably cheaper.

am going to recover a chunkier wing back next spring...6 yrds of fabric at 50% off came to $170.00. My husband will assist as we have done one other upholstery job and I know it will turn out much better with his ability to do the corners tight etc. I was quoted $350 to $400 to have it done. I like our price better and it will take us about 2 days to do it.

You can always make a slipcover out of drop cloth fabric or any fabric you like. Or you can shop arround and get estimates from more than one reupholster. I do not think 200-300 is too high as then you will have a new chair which would probably cost 2-3 times as much in a furniture store. If you have a fabric you like that might save you some money. I have picked up upolestry fabric at yard sales. We just redid a room divider screen with a yard sale upolestry fabric that I paid about $5 for about six yards.

To help you decide, the average wing back chair requires between 5 and 6 yards of 54-inch fabric. More may be necessary if you choose a design that has to be centered and/or matched for aesthetics. If you choose a solid or texture it will, of course, take the minimum yardage. If you purchase a $30/per yard fabric from, say, Hobby Lobby and you need 6 yards. that will come to $180.00. Unless...you opt to use a 40% off coupon, then the total will be reduced to $108.00, which is a little more manageable. I don't know how brave you are, but upholstering a wing back chair is a bit of a challenge. If you do elect to do it yourself, I recommend you look into purchasing the proper tools to do the job. You won't be sorry.

P.S. I think this is a great chair and probably very expensive when new.

Thank you. I'm liking the print more now. Here's a brighter pic :)

It IS a nice chair and the existing upholstery job is first class. The lining up of the motifs and matching are both spot on.

@Daisye A headboard recommendation is tricky without seeing the room, please post pictures. If you already have a lot of wood in the room, a fabric headboard would break it up adding both color and texture. If you have very little wood and like it, a wood headboard would probably be my choice. I don't think that metal or wicker work well with this but that's just me. No matter your choice I think a color that is close to the legs of this chair is the way to go. For a bed covering, I would probably go with the green and beige in the chair and add navy pillows and foot blanket. Curtains would depend upon the wall color. Sorry for the novel, without pictures or more information it's very hard for me to give a clear response.

Where I live, $350 would be the starting price of labor not including the fabric - unless, of course, you get a family member or good friend to do the work. Upholstering is very expensive, I've found. I love the fabric on he chair. Why not just have it professionally cleaned and keep it as it is?
    • Daisye Daisye on Nov 16, 2015
Yes, it's staying as is. It is very unique. Thanks! :)

I think that price is low. There are a number of youtube videos showing how to reupholster wing back chairs and how to make slipcovers. If you don't mind a challenge, it would save you money to do it yourself.

Why don't you paint it. Use fabric paint.

I have seen chairs painted with fabric paint - the texture of the design will slightly remain but it could look stunning in a light beige or if you want to go dark - a wine color would look awesome. klook on line for instructions - I'm sure they are out there....

    Slip cover it.

Go to www.sailrite.com they have very good instructions on how to upholster.
  • Gerrie Gerrie on Nov 22, 2015
Lovely chair. On the internet go to graphicsfairy.com . They had a link to instructions and pictures of a chair designed like your chair. It will look and feel like leather according to her instructions. The price you quote is low for getting it upholstered. That would just be the cost of labor with the fabric being additional.

Paying to upholster it is too expensive and kills the deal. Make a slipcover instead. Paint will prove too messy and it will be scratchy when it dries. You can make slipcovers out of anything-- even canvas painters dropcloths. And it's not that hard. That's a beautiful chair. You risk ruining it with the fabric paint.
    • Daisye Daisye on Nov 23, 2015
Yes, I agree about painting it. I like the uniqueness of the print. I think I'll cover it if it doesn't work out well with the room. Thanks! :)

Daisy, I actually think the print is one you could work with. Maybe pull one of the colors and find a stripe or a graphic in that color for a pillow? Good luck and great score!
