Hi Daisy! Cute house! I am more of a blue person myself, but the red provides a real pop of color. I would say that if you were going to go with blue, then perhaps something a little more muted to complement the taupe/gray color?

Hi @Daisye - I think that the blue is less "rustic" looking than barn red, if that is what you mean : ) And, you don't necessarily have to paint the door white. Since the gray and blues are both rather neutral, along with the light trim, you might want a pop of color for the front door. Adding in the red or black will provide some contrast.

I would go with the red against the siding color.
  • What color is your home? It is hard to tell from the pictures. I also want to ask what color of shutters do yourneighbors have? What color are you thinking about for the door? Are you selling? Or buying? because this could influence decisions. From the picture red makes the house appear more of a pinkish color. the blue you pick just does nothing. The roof of the bay window stands out and with that being said I would think about shutter and door color that would compliment the roof and not fight the grays in the roof

    • I would go with black or dark gray shutters -it's classic and the door could be any color you desire! I live in a subdivision with about 2000 homes with shutters and black goes with everything. You have yellow door, red porch floor? Gray roof, and gray house. Black shutters would tie this together for a more finished look. If you don't like the yellow door, then paint it a color that will be complimented by the porch floor.

I went completely out of the norm on my house. Didn't want the same color that any of my neighbors had which ranged from red, gray, white, black, green, and blue. I have a white cape cod and my husband painted all my shutters a gorgeous turquoise color. Absolutely love it. Spray paints for plastic comes in so many colors now that the sky is the limit.

I like the blue (more of a gray blue), it would look great with a brick read door. :)
  • Lilly Collins Lilly Collins on Nov 16, 2015
Go with the blue one. It suits better and it won't get dirty so much. :)
  • Cheryl Gyles Cheryl Gyles on Nov 16, 2015
I'm partial to the red, and I would also paint the front door the same color.
  • Lori Jackson Lori Jackson on Nov 17, 2015
I like blue, but not the blue here--something a bit more slate colored for me. I think the same is true for the red. Both would be lovely, but with just a bit of toning down.
  • Marion Nesbitt Marion Nesbitt on Nov 17, 2015
Red - hands down! You could paint your front door a blue - but I would go with a slate blue.
  • Gill Moreton Gill Moreton on Nov 17, 2015
Red! Red! Red! But if you go blue, not the one on the photo!
  • Nikki Nikki on Nov 17, 2015
RED!!!! I love red front doors and you have the perfect siding to go with it! I think your front door would be very cute painted black, It would tie your shingles into the rest of the look... Even though your shingles aren't black they look to be a charcoal grey color, which is in the same color family and I think it would give your home a nice pop having the red but still be a classic look and not too overwhelming....

Have you thought about Black? - or a very Dark Charcoal? - it goes well with your roof color and looks very sharp - then you have many options for paint color for your front door!

Check out Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue! I still think I would go with black or charcoal gray shutters with the wythe blue door. Get a Welcome decal or a decal with your house numbers for the front door too :) Check all of these ideas on Pinterest

Neither. Dark sage green shutters with a pop of mellow yellow on the front door. (Just my opinion.)
  • Mickey Baron Mickey Baron on Nov 17, 2015
I, personally, like the contrast of a dark, dark, olive green with the color of your siding And a jet black shiney door.. But between these 2... RED
  • PhilCo PhilCo on Nov 17, 2015
I can't explain why, because normally I would shy away from bright colours, but in this case...Blue!
  • Rich Rich on Nov 17, 2015
    red no doubt
  • Gill Moreton Gill Moreton on Nov 18, 2015
Hi, just think that many brightish blues are a little harsh. The softer slate blue would probably look nice. It's hard to tell the exact colour of the siding from a photo. You have a lovely home. I prefer softer colours such as a rusty red or a soft grey blue . The brighter colours are harder to live with and stand out too much for me. Personal taste at the end of the day! Good luck with it, whatever you choose.

Red-what is the colour of the roof? I am seeing a green roof and blue would clash. Black or a dark greige would also be an option.
  • Holdenerc Holdenerc on Nov 20, 2015
    Most definitely the red.
  • Lyn2398900 Lyn2398900 on Nov 20, 2015
I agree! The red is really nice. Strange, we all are on the same page.
  • Rae Rae on Nov 21, 2015
i would be lying if i said anything but the red. My house is a similar color and once upon a time had black shutters, I have been burgandy now for some years. Long enough that they have been down repainted and remounted.
  • Gail Hall Gail Hall on Nov 21, 2015

Wellllll......do you want your home to stand out in the neighborhood or blend in more? ;-) It's all such a personal choice of what will look best. Because your house siding is quite neutral, virtually any color will look stunning for the shutters. Have you considered a dark pewter color? That's very traditional for your style of house in your area and would look very nice with your gray shingles. I'd paint the door in a different accent color of your choice. That gives your door more presence. Whatever color you choose make sure it's not too "clean"....in other words, the color will look better and more appropriate for your home's style if it's a muted tone. (Example the blue you show is more of a clean color. The red is muted.)
  • S. Roy S. Roy on Nov 27, 2015
I agree with Connie. Paint the shutters pewter and the front door becomes more your focal point so go with color there. Maybe a slate blue door?
  • Michele Brown Hirsch Michele Brown Hirsch on Sep 01, 2016
    Red or burgundy.
  • Shirley Mason Shirley Mason on Oct 14, 2016
Red most definitely. That blue is not nice to the eye nor if you were wanting to sell; I would not consider unless the paint was changed. black would make them look nice.
  • Jud3889671 Jud3889671 on Nov 19, 2016
    How about green.
  • G. G. on Nov 21, 2016
    Red
  • Patti Newton Patti Newton on Nov 21, 2016
Definitely Red. You have a warm tan/beige siding so you need to stick with a warm accent color. You might see if there is a slight less vibrant red - one that is slightly muted. Otherwise it will pop in a not-so-good way. You want it to look like it belongs there.
