Just add a deeper board on top and screw it on. If you want to add a piece of trim in the corner it would ease the transition.

If you want a larger/deeper area to set bigger items. Is this for over a Fireplace? You could box in the whole Fireplace/+ Mantle with 2 x 12 inch wide Board for Top and .. adding 2 x 10 along the Sides to make it sturdy so the 12 inch top board x length would sit right on top of the mantle that is there already and the side pieces would be the braces on the sides... this this could be screwed together, You could add trim on the facing out part of the sides and top to add to the look. check out Pinterest for Fireplace ideas.

For nicknacks the first two are good and you could display bricks on the third answer. Houzz has some beautiful ideas, too.

Google how to build a mantle. You will find most mantles are made of different dimensional wood, trim, and moulding pieces. With this in hand, I am sure you will come up with a nice finished product.

A photo would be helpful but can you just add a larger shelf on top of existing shelf? That would be the simplest solution if it's doable. Then you can add trim around edges to hide that there are two shelves put together. Stain or paint it to match and blend in with what is existing and you are good to go!
