I think you should paint them; change the knobs, then glaze the cabinets to antique them.

Hi Just a little more info please. Is the floor staying
    • Marie Marie on Nov 20, 2015
@Jean Myles The floor will eventually be replaced but not anytime soon, I'd love to have wood floors. not sure what kind of flooring would match that counter top though.

I would install the beadboard right around the room to get horizontal line to make the room look larger. I'd paint it a creamy white rather than stark white. Then I'd paint the green (like it) above the beadboard. I'd do this first before considering a paint job on the cabinets - like the warm tones. If I did paint, I might get brave and do them the colour of your wood stove. I would replace the curtain with a mini-slat blind to let in more light, but which can be closed for privacy.

First what is your budget for revamping the cabinets? My suggestions would be if operating on a tight budget would be to add decorative moulding frame to the upper caninets, then paint them, and add new knobs. Next I suggest to remove the floating shelf that is above the window and remove all the extra items that are onto of the shelves. Yes, adding the beadboard would give the space a fresh new look and make the free standing stove more of a nice focal point in the space.

How about adding bead board to the center of the doors to match the wrap around? Similar to this, you could cut rectangles for the center, possibly trim them. http://lilluna.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Kitchen-Cabinet-Makeover-4.jpg and the full source is here. http://lilluna.com/easy-kitchen-cupboard-makeover/

Definitely change hardware to black antique. I love faux stone walls. We did that on the wall where are space heater was and I love it. You could change the counter top to a darker color to match the hardware as well.

If you are keeping the floor I would paint the cabinets a lighter color and change the hardware.I would paint your largest wall with an accent color and the remaining walls with a lighter version. You can research the paint colors at Behr.com which shows you color inspiration. I would also recomend a different window treatment.

I have beadboard in my kitchen too, painted an oatmeal colour , and changed my cupboards to white , very cottage , some of my cupboard doors have glass instead of solid , which adds to the lightness , these glass doors have mullion squares which adds to the country cottage charm . Lighten up! It will look lovely

Hi Marie! This is such a cute little country kitchen! If you are just looking for color ideas, then I think I would paint the cabinets white, but remove the doors to the top ones to create some open shelving. Also, replace that thin shelf over the window with something more substantial. The green wall llooks a bit dark, but without seeing the whole kitchen and the adjacent stove space it is difficult to tell what else needs to be taken into consideration. Can you post more pics of the other side of the room and the stove area?

Try putting bead board wallpaper in the center of your kitchen cupboards and paint the door and wallpaper with a good washable paint. I did that with old plain slab doors and they look great.
    • Kerensa Zieske Kerensa Zieske on Nov 26, 2015
@Lynn Foreman that is brilliant in my humble opinion. I didn't even know this was an option for wall paper.

I would go black and white, paint the cabinets black/walls white, remove the cabinet door (above microwave) and build shelves across stove for storage, and spend the big bucks on stone floor to protect from wood stove, could also put stone on wall behind stove, to reflect heat...You're very lucky to have a wood stove, few people are that smart. Paint legs and chairs black too, will help bring it all together. A good coat of stove treatment will perk up the stove, to look all one color

@Marie If you can't do it right now, just take up the linoleum, and paint the plywood ... it will give it a fresh look as well as give a seal for future treatment. You could always just use flat landscape blocks around on the floor around the stove for protection ... I have carpet at my fire place and plan to pull it out and just place the blocks down, to prevent sparks on the floor when adding wood...also recommend a fire protection mat under them as well.

Some good suggestions: one more--do you have a pretty collection of anything to put on top of your cabinets? If you don't have a collection and need the top for storage, put everything in pretty baskets that would look wonderful after all your painting is done. Don't use the top of the cabinets for just anything except what looks pretty and cohesive.
    • Marie Marie on Nov 20, 2015
@Marie Alesi Caruana I know it definitely needs work. I will be able to do better once I have a bit more storage. Sometimes I feel like I have half of a kitchen lol. It's still hard for me to decide what should go up there. I will definitely be googling and pinteresting once I'm ready to tackle that part.

I suggest putting trim on the cupboard door, painting them white and swapping out the hardware for new handles. This would brighten them up and make them look more modern. Much cheaper than replacing them.

I agree with the gentleman from Discover Repurposing about the short pony wall separating the stove from the kitchen cabinets. I'd remove the makeshift sagging shelf over the sink between the cabinets, Wash all the cabinets with TSP, sand lightly, prime then paint & change the hardware. My suggestion is white cabinets with bronze hardware (which you can spray paint). Add a neutral color such as Sundrenched Sand to the walls. This will make your kitchen appear larger and brighter allowing you to add colorful linens of your choice and wall decor which you can change out during different seasons. As far as flooring, check with your nearest Habitat for Humanity for discounted hardwood laminate or tiles. No need to replace your counters for now. Work with the wood look. Have fun redecorating and enjoy your new kitchen. Remember...it's only paint.

I agree, you need something bright and cheery, as well as some nice storage space to hide some of your goodies. Definitely paint the cabinets. I also would move the table further away from the sink/window area (if you can, space may not permit) and replace the floor, again, if you can. I would unify whatever you store on top of the cupboards, i.e., use somewhat related items in size and appearance. Space is always an issue - while a stockpot is essential, it does not do anything for the top of a cabinet. But again, you may not have anywhere else to put it. Remove the dark valence from the window to make the room brighter and take off or replace the sagging shelf above it, in fact, make it even in height with the tops of the cupboards. I assume that you are using the free standing stove; it does take up a lot of space but if it's working you need all that area to make it safe. Good luck to you.

@Marie That is what I assumed. I wonder if there is anything you can do with the wall behind it? Again, it may be a safety issue so it may not be possible.

We applied beadboard (pale yellow) as you want to do, painted the cabs white with just a hint of gray added to the paint and I've had many compliments! Remove the storage board over the sink and if it appeals to you corbals can be placed under the cupboards at each end of the upper cabs to give them a more "built in furniture" finish. The stem wall is a good idea and if you frame it about 6" wide, you can use that space to tuck your cookie sheets into. Make them so they slide out for easy access! Change out your hardware for a fresh new look and spray paint the hinges to save money.

U could raise your cabinets and put a shelf under them. I agree crown molding around top and paint (chalk paint not as much work) they have peel and stick tile backsplashes that look cool and cut scissors. U could do an island instead of a hip wall. ( good place to hide trash can) in island pull out trash drawer.
    • Marie Marie on Nov 20, 2015
@Rhonda Miller I'm not able to do an island because of not having a dining room the kitchen table has to stay in that spot. I have on the other hand wanted to put in a base cabinet on the other side of the kitchen but it hasn't happened yet.

Agree, paint the cabinets...I'm ready to do mine, well, watch while a daughter does them! i'm thinking of off white on the uppers and a light green on the bottom ones. Also am going to look into having them shine, which there is a paint for that.

What a darling little area. I think I would stay a little rustic and white wash paint the cabinets take off the doors and make a frame door with small hole chicken wire insert and a rustic looking knob or handle. I think I would even do the chair white washed. Add a few roosters and a crate or two. So cute!!
  • Patti Jo whitten Patti Jo whitten on Nov 24, 2015
As for the counter top, to be frugal I would sponge paint them white and a light beige and then there is a sealant that is almost like ceramic I have used before and its marvelous. Can't think of the name but got it at Home Depot.

I notice the shelf over your sink is sagging in the middle (or is it the pic?) I think I would replace that with a narrow cabinet that fits down to the top of the window molding or just above the molding and add a fluorescent light. Then create another area for your cook books, etc..maybe at the end of your counter? The cabinets should be painted a light color (oil based paint/semi-gloss) and then the counter-top should be a darker shade. If you do not plan to replace it there are lots of painting techniques and instructions for painting counter-tops on line. Vines and pretty vases or antique items would look nice atop your cabinets. I like your idea of bead board behind the heater as well as the one green wall. I would also invest in a long nice board with hooks to hang the pots on.

As for beadboard behind the wood stove you better check fire codes. The kitchen cabinets wood look great painted. More detail for the doors would be mouldings.
