Making over old dresser into kitchen island with old wood top.

Want a finish on wood top so I don't get water damage.

you can use multiple coats of polyurethane to create a finish similar to a bar top. I have done this but it requires a lot of work. you need to repeatedly spray on the finish and sand with very fine grit paper, wipe with a tack rag and do again and again until you get to yoor desired end. it protects agst moisture but not heat.

You can also buy a food safe wood protection. We have butcher block counters and use Watco Butcher Block Oil & Finish. It is labelled safe for food contact and provides a protective finish (if applied to untreated wood). We got ours at Home Depot.
