$5 Thrifted Silver Cups & Succulents

You know all those little silver-plate cups, creamers, sugar bowls, etc. that you see on the shelves at thrift stores? They're cheap and elegant, but who uses them for their original purpose anymore (not many, obviously, or they wouldn't be on the shelves!)? I've used them for holding office supplies, makeup brushes and things like that, but I think I've found my favorite use ever for them: as planters!
This is one of my favorite quick little DIY's I've done in a long time - these succulent planters are just so sweet! You can make them in about 5 minutes for less than $5, depending on what you find at your local thrift stores and they make unique gifts and fun decor!

Succulents work so nicely in the small silver containers because they are small, stay small (for the most part) and don't need a lot of water, so using gravel for drainage should work without making holes in the silver. I also really like the look of the thick leaves with the vintage silver.
I originally got the idea from a store I walked by on a visit to California where I snapped these pictures to help me remember. You can use bigger silver like they did (pitchers and teapots can be seen on the left), but they're more expensive to find and I like the look of the smaller silver pieces better. These were selling between $25-$60.
After hitting a couple thrift stores, finding some discounted succulents and raiding our gravel paths, I had the items I needed and mine were going to come in at under $5 each. Nice!
In just a few minutes, I had the silver containers planted and ready to be gifted (or kept!). These are the types of projects we all like, right? Easy + low cost = DIY love
