I've used cans of spray paint and it worked fine on Laminate.

I would try chalk paint. My Daughters has used it on several projects, and it worked great, no need for primer either. I have a few projects that I'm going to try it on, but I'm going to make my own, as it's very expensive. I went on Pinterest, and there are several recipes, and you use supplies that aren't expensive at all. I'm going to try the one with plaster of paris, but there is another one that uses unsanded grout, and you can use any kind of paint. Only thing I haven't found a solution for is the finish, the wax isn't cheap either, and you could use poluerethane, but that's expensive too. But there is so much you could do with the chalk paint, check out pinterest, and you tube.

Yes absolutely! I've found the best way is to use Krylon spraint paint made for plastic in satin finish. However if you prime it with a latex primer (I like Bullseye 1-2-3 by Zinsser) it'll hold any other paint too.
