Split gas usage in a duplex

Heather (New House New Home) on Nov 25, 2015You'll need to get a separate meter for each unit. Or you can just split the bill in half each month.Helpful Reply

B. Enne on Nov 25, 2015Ask the gas company or whoever owns/manages your current meter to come and install separate meters, and have each tenant pay their gas bill directly. Sharing a bill is never an ideal situation, and leaves you responsible.Helpful Reply

Kathy Bitzan on Nov 25, 2015You would be better off getting meters installed. Otherwise some people take advantage of a split situation my keeping their home warmer than they would normally because someone else is paying the bill... Call you local gas company for assistance. A lot of apartments are splitting bills for tenants by per person and square footage of apartment. I don't believe there is a true answer unless each has there own meter. I for one live alone and don't want to pay for someone else's water or heat. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply

Johnchip on Dec 02, 2015You have to do separate meters then and this has to be done through your municipal gas company, it is a very dangerous DIY and likely against code unless they do it or have referred service people.Helpful Reply

Sue Kiene on Apr 30, 2016Yes you will need 2 meters and you will need a plumber to separate the 2 services. Many times in duplexes there is only one set of lines going up thru the wall to gas stoves and dependent on whether there is a basement even to hot water tanks and furnaces. Splitting the bill is not really the answer. One person versus 2 or 3. Who takes long showers, who does not? Who likes the temperature at lets say 68 or who wants to run around in shorts and a tank top inside all winter.Helpful Reply
