Saving on Granite under cook top

Question

I have a 36 x 22 cook top that I just cant see spending $$$ to put granite under since only a few inches will show after its cut out. Im thinking of using a piece of butcher block. Any other suggestions?

The trick is to transition the surface for the rest of the counter top. If this 'cook top' is in a small stand alone island then yes...some butcher would work. I have done a lot of installs using very large (18 x 21') granite tiles. I can get these for about 4 to 5 bucks a square foot...way less than slab. Thanks. My cook top is not in an island but only 11 inches away from my counter top oven on one side and 23 inches to the corner. I have 18 x 18 Ubatuba granite tiles but want to update to something lighter and without the grout lines.
