I know there is a way to paint the grout on my kitchen floor. I have tried to clean it but there is no hope of that so I thought about paint. But what kind latex, acrylic, oil-based ? I know someone will have the answer!
What color would be best?

Spray grout with bleach, walk away.

The easiest way is to at least try the bleach trick. But, my husband changes ours on a regular basis (he likes keeping busy! lol). He 'drills' out the old grout by using an electric hand drill - sort of a pushing type maneuver. Then fills in with new grout and seals. This is not a hard job but does take a while - it can be done in segments if you can't get it done in one go. We do ours in white - it always looks terrific, and really freshens the place up. Home Depot and Lowe's sell everything you need. Oh, another trick: just sand or 'drill' out the top surface of the old grout - and recover with a coat of new. You can also get grout paint but what an effort for something that isn't going to hold up very long.

I have used on a couple of floors the acrylic paint you get at craft stores for $1.00. I use a round stencil brush to apply, any that gets on the tile wipe up and that's that. Worse case scenario tile gets dirty again in high traffic areas, touch it ip. I have had very good results doing this. When I first Started doing this, there was no paint being sold for this application. For a small bathroom, I.e. 5 x 6,one bottle will do it.....cost 1.00 or so.

As Kelly Miller mentioned, there are at least 2 products I know of, designed especially for "painting" grout. One is called Grout Refresh and the other is Grout Renew. Home Depot sells one; Lowe's sells the other. (Look on the aisle where they sell the grout.) It comes in different colors so you can match to your original grout color, or change the grout color to something completely different. I used it on the floor tile in one of my bathrooms about 2 years ago and it's holding up well. Unfortunately, I don't have a "before" picture but here's the "after."

@Hangaright I don't know why not. You might need to apply a second coat after the first one dries but one (or both) of the websites for the products I mentioned say you can use it to change the color of your grout and I don't recall anything that said you can't use a lighter color over dark grout. Check the instructions on the label and maybe try it in an inconspicuous place first, like under the refrigerator, and see what you think.

I have used both grout refresh and grout renew. They are both great products and last forever. You can change the grout color to whatever color you want to with these product. You can also buy concrete paint which works well too. It is a time consuming job but when done well worth the effort. I just used the bleach method and it does not clean the grout evenly.

It's a lot of work, but it can be done and will look wonderful when done. Check the product you purchase regarding the proper sealer to use afterwards. I did my own grout once and did not seal it, big mistake.

My kitchen floor resembled the picture you posted. I just did my kitchen tile grout with a product called tile and grout buster11. Spray the grout with a bit of water and then with another spray bottle spray some grout buster on the grout and scrub with a stiff brush or old stiff toothbrush, then take a mop and wash the area and let dry. Then you have to paint the cleaned grout with a sealer and let it sit for five to 8 minutes and then wash the area 2 times. It is a lot of hard work but my grout looks as good as new. Good luck. Sealing the grout will help to keep it clean.

Carpet cleaning services quite often can steam clean the grout. I had it done. Worked great.

About four weeks ago, my grout looked exactly like that..brown to almost black (11 1/2 years of grime). I bought the bleach gel you use to clean bathrooms and literally ran it down every line of tile. Let it sit a couple of minutes as I worked on the next area. Came back and scrubbed it with used toothbrush, soaked up dirt with white rag. Stunning gorgeous. Let dry over night and came back in with grout sealer (get the little container next to it that has two different sized heads on it and use the one that works with your width of grout). My floors still look perfect, despite a muddy Thanksgiving with two dogs and two grandkids running in and out. Alot of work but so worth it.

Houston homebuildets never seal tile..can't say exactly why..maybe afraid of trspping moisture/humidity under tile..creating mold issues..totally guessing here. But my floor grout still looks perfect so I am happy with my decision.

Hi. If the Grout is not real high, go over it with new Grout in a thin layer. I've done this and it looks great
  • Laurie Laurie on Nov 27, 2015
Steam cleaner like Rhea above said. Would be the fastest and less labor for you. You can buy one for less than 150.00 and you could use it all over to clean things in your house. And no chemicals.

I found Mr. Clean magic eraser worked well, moisten grout and sponge. It takes some scrubbing but worked and then seal the grout after it is completely dry.

I hired a professional to paint the grout, I was able to choose a new color from gray to a taupe. It was a two day process. Day one to paint the grout day two to seal it again. It was absolutely beautiful and not that expensive. I had a large kitchen and foyer area and it was approximately $500. The amount of work I saw as they were doing both processes made the $500 well worth it.

I used a product like Grout Renew and a year later it still looks fabulous. It's a cheaper option than regrouting and there are several color options. It's found in Home Depot and possibly Lowe's. All you have to do it apply with a toothbrush and let it cure for 24 hours. Test on a small area first because there is risk for etching. You will be surprised at what this will cover up. I covered up dark splotches of pet stains, now it is a nice even color!
  • Joanie Joanie on Nov 27, 2015
You can hire someone to come in and professionally clean and re-seal it. It would cost about the same and looks great.
  • Adrian Adrian on Nov 27, 2015
Use "Grout Refresh". It comes in lots of colors and you can find it at Lowes and maybe Home Depot. I chose to use a dark color because no matter what you do eventually your white grout will eventually darken again. You can clean the grout with Clorox Clean up and a steel brush and it will come clean but not for very long. Even if you use grout sealer it will wear off sooner or later.

I did all my tile floors. In the tile section at Home Depot is Grout Haze Remover and Polyblend Grout Renew. You will need gloves, sponge, grout brush, old toothbrush. I wet my grout left it for a bit and then poured the remover along the grout, let sit for a couple of minutes and use the brush to clean, wipe down with sponge and water. Let sit for a minute you may see a white powdery look but that's ok. Then use the grout renew along the lines, I used my toothbrush to paint the grout. I had a pointed top so I could put down the grout in a thin line. Let it dry to a haze and wipe with sponge or damp rag. Don't let it dry completely on the tile just the lines. You can pick just about any color you want. Mine has been down for months and still looks like the day I did it. .

You can just replace the grout. You can get a tool for digging the grout out of the grout lines. It's not hard and you'd be surprised how it will just come out. Then, re-grout.

Used latex semigloss on my bathroom and kitchen tile floor grout. Used artist angle brush for narrow application. Amazingly easy to clean, and lasting power is remarkable. Beats scraping out old grout and regrouting. And, the amount used is negligible even though it is a time-consuming job. Also recommend using knee pads. Have fun.

I used the poly blend grout renew on the masterbath floor turned out beautiful and just finished remodeling my guest bathroom and I am using it in there. I ran out of money to replace the tile floor. Good luck!!!

As a retired builder, "mostly tired" the grout is not that hard to clean, just get a good cleaner and a stiff brush and clean it. then after it dries put 3 coats of sealer and it will look like new again. You will need to keep it clean and how often depends on your family. but just use soap and warm water and let it dry and seal it again. you can put the sealer on the tile too. Hope this helps.

I had great success on 15 year old kitchen floor grout with ZEP Grout Cleaner and Whitener from Home Depot. The dirt and goo just came right off with a stiff brush.
  • KBM KBM on Nov 27, 2015
You have several options to clean the grout. Use a stiff brush and a good quality cleaner designed for cement based floors, scrub with vinegar and water, or on badly stained grout we use muriatic acid, but you must use a respirator, rubber gloves and have the room well ventilated. Rinse the floor very well if you use a cleaner or the acid before you proceed with anything else. You can use a scoreall and scrape out the grout or use a 3-4" circular saw with a diamond blade to remove the grout, but you must have a steady hand. Clean out the grout joint of any residue and regrout with a modified stain resistant grout. You can use a grout stain or a product like Grout Renew, but the floor must be completly free of ALL sealers or it will not work. DO NOT use sealer on glazed tile, all it will do is make it slippery and the sealer will eventually yellow and wear off in places, making it look worse than if you only had discolored grout. Sealers on any tile floor must be removed completely from the tiles before you apply a new coat or you will have discolored areas from the normal wear. Sealers can be used to seal just the grout joints, but if you keep the floor swept and mopped grout discoloration should not be a problem. Colored grouts will eventually fade due to the dyes in them, especially if you use a harsh cleaner, soaps or detergents on the floor. We recommend that a tile floor be regularly vacuumed and mopped with a vinegar and water mix. Detergents and soaps will leave a residue on the porous grout which will collect dirt and make the grout look dirty. My family has been in the Ceramic Tile, Stone and Marble installation business since 1918.

I don't know what method you will eventually use, but I can tell you how to keep your grout nice for a long time (in my house, so far 18 years). You simply dry the shower off with your towel each time you bathe or shower. I do this with my sinks too, and never have to clean them. I do sanitize them with pine-sol once a week, but s rub? Not this girl

Polyblend Grout Renew is a water based acrylic urethane stain and sealer, used to renew or change the color of your grout while sealing in the color... Home Depot, or Lowes should carry it... Hope this helps...
  • Ellen Ellen on Nov 27, 2015
I also used Polyblend. Good product. I went darker than my stained grout to camouflage dry dirt that settled into the grooves (thanks to my 2 dogs) between vacuuming. A little tedious to paint in (take it in sections) but well-worth the one-time effort. Works great!

I too had nasty grout that wouldn't come clean no matter what I used. I got the PolyBlend Grout Renew (comes in many shades at Home Depot) and did all the grout on my tile floors. It was hard work sitting on the tile for hours on end, but the result was worth it. It looks like I have new floors! I highly recommend this product.

:) Lots of elbow grease! Seriously, baking soda, vinegar and a tooth brush. I did this and then applied a new grout color purchased at HD and then sealed it. It's a lot of work, but well worth the time & effort. Came out great. Best of luck.
