Milk Paint or Primer/Paint?

I am really interested in redoing some wood pieces around my house, but as you can tell I am new to this. I am not sure of the difference between milk painting or painting with paint and primer. Can someone please help me get started.

you can search on "chalk paint" at the top of the page here...you can see lots of examples. If one catches your eye you can follow that path or blaze your own new trail.
