Use lanterns, candles, small figurines, vases filled with fresh or artificial greenery, etc. Place the items so that they are different heights with the taller items being towards the outside & shorter items toward the center. Hang or prop a wreath in the center. You can fill in will clusters of greenery, berries and ornaments.

I love to use what I have on hand or in my yard as much as possible.  Do you have any greenery outside - holly, magnolia leaves, ivy?  Chop some of them and layer them on your mantle.  Got any candles in your house, leftover ornaments, lanterns?  Use them, too.  If you want some touches of white to break up all of the green, go to the store and buy some baby's breath and add the sprigs to the greenery.  I no longer have a fireplace (sad face), but used to hang a big red bow in the center.  Hope this helps.  Enjoy the season!

An easy and inexpensive way to dress a mantle is to use some of the pieces you already have and like. Then make a trip to the 'dollar' and/or thrift store pick up a few holiday or seasonal touches. Keep your color scheme in mind. You might find ribbon, artificial greens, florals, candles & candlesticks, scarves, etc. Use your imagination; mix and match your existing items with a few or a lot of new pieces. Don't limit yourself, select items just because you like or love them. Let your mantle evolve and change with the seasons or your moods.
