I would highly recommend that you use a string of LED lights for your garland, They do not get hot and the newer "warm white" lights are very close to standard white lights/ the led colored lights cast a more intense color.

Years ago I made a rope-rag garland. I bought 3 different-patterned yards of Christmas material. Cut them into strips about 1" X 8" then tied them around the rope in random order, making a loop in the rope at each end for hanging. It took me about 8 hours to make a 12' rope. I hang it draped on 3 plant hooks (ends & center) and use it to hang my Christmas cards. I punch a hole in the corner of the cards & pull a piece of the garland thru the hole to hang the card. I hang it in the archway between the living and dining room & it looks amazing! I LOVE the idea of the light garland, though. I would think it would be the same. Using the string of LED lights as the rope. Just making sure the light is between your tied strips. I hope that this was helpful. Good luck.
