I want to antique some old "picklewood" kitchen cabinets but...

While getting contractor bids we found out that the original home builder cut corners by "papering over" a few of the large cabinet side boards colored to match the wood, we have no idea what's underneath or if it will hold paint or not (plastic or wood?). Since we never noticed in 15 years we have lived there, we're now very concerned that we'll have to replace them instead of refacing, or repainting. Any suggestions?

Not sure if it would solve your problem or not, but a bonding primer will help paint stick to most surfaces without sanding or stripping. Most paint and big box stores sell bonding primer. I used it on kitchen cabinets without sanding and the paint held beautifully.
