If you're lucky enough to have a laundry room, luxuriate in it, because being able to do laundry at home is pretty amazing. But if your laundry room isn't quite all you need and desire, don't worry. You're not alone, and fortunately, there are tons of options out there for increasing storage space (even in small rooms) and making a laundry room an enjoyable place to work as well as an orderly one. In keeping with the theme of DIY home decor tips, this post focus on the laundry room:
We took a look at some of the ways creative Hometalkers are keeping their laundry rooms under control, with a close eye on budget, since these are tough times and not all of you want to spend a lot of money on a full DIY remodel.

This laundry room had two strikes against it: it was very small, and the owners couldn't afford to spend any money on making it more functional. Using a mixture of thrifted, scavenged, and repurposed items, they managed to completely redo their laundry area and add much-needed storage.

This laundry room had two strikes against it: it was very small, and the owners couldn't afford to spend any money on making it more functional. Using a mixture of thrifted, scavenged, and repurposed items, they managed to completely redo their laundry area and add much-needed storage.
Here's a great example of a budget remodel, because it was done with virtually no money: the goal was to reuse, scavenge, thrift, and cobble together everything needed for a functional laundry room. This small laundry room had been dominated by a huge cabinet, and now it's light, airy, and open with clear, clean organization.
Removing the cabinet didn't have to mean sacrificing shelving, though. Look at how the homeowners created ample horizontal and vertical space with shelving, a unit over the washer for storage, and a curtained cupboard for storing items that aren't so pleasant to look at. The awkward corner that could become a blank space is instead used to house the hamper in a very efficient use of space.

This laundry room redo cost just $124, and includes more shelving, custom herringbone paint, and a really clever system for handling things that need to hang dry.

If you have a little more, here's another inspiring budget remodel. For very little money, Ashley Meyer gave herself a $124 new laundry room that's a whole lot more practical than her old one.
Let's take a look at what she did, nicely illustrated in these two photos. First off, of course, she painted, always a good move when you're redoing a room. The herringbone pattern adds visual interest and makes the room feel bigger, so it's less oppressive and more pleasant to work in.
Next, she added shelving. Note that she installed it at different heights and lengths to provide room for a variety of things, including loose objects and those stored in containers (key to creating more storage). Her hanging rack provides a great space for hang-drying clothing, and she also installed a rack for hanging cleaning supplies (not seen here). The key to this remodel and storage space creation was that she thought vertically, taking advantage of previously underutilized space to make more room.

Doubling as a mudroom, this space was cramped and not really working for the owners. So they went to work on it to create copious shelving and nooks for all their laundry needs. The result is neat, orderly, and totally functional.

This cottage mudroom and laundry room has a more spacious setting, making it much more flexible and accommodating. At the same time, there's more stuff to store, because people expect to be able to sit down, stash bags and coats, pick up winter boots, and so forth. In this remodel, the focus was on creating a whole lot of storage, including drawers in the bench seating, shelves at varying heights that contain baskets filled with various items, and rails for hanging things to dry. There's even a spot just for the hamper.
The result is a clean, spacious, refreshing spot, instead of a chaotic mudroom that makes you want to flee in the opposite direction.

Alongside creating more space needs to come using it well. Laundry room organization is key to effectively managing the space you have and making the most of even limited room. Using containers on shelves and hanging things when possible helps to keep things under control and frees up room - and as an incentive to get you started with an organizing project, here are some free laundry room printables!
