Looks like this runs about $60 on Amazon. I think most utility companies and a bunch of non-profits offer discount energy audits that give you all this info, plus much more, for a pretty reasonable price. Not sure if this purchase would be worth it for the average consumer.

Like any tool you need to have a reason to own it. I own a much higher end unit that I utilize for doing microbial evaluations when looking for hidden moisture within walls. The primary difference from what I own and a unit such as this is accuracy and distance. I can shoot up to 50 feet away and come within one degree of the temp that I spot.

After that distance the reliability of temp goes way down. ...»

However sense I purchased my thermal camera, It has not come out of my tool bag from that point on.

As far as a tool for the average homeowner DIY type. It has all sorts of uses from looking for air leaks to checking out your cars engine for issues. Just need to remember that a tool such as this is not designed to provide perfect temp results. Its just used to determine temp differences to help you "see" changes and to spot something you otherwise would need to touch which can be unsafe if its really hot.
