Wooden Chair...What 'finish' after the stain has dried ?

by UpState
I have an old (maybe a library) chair - stripped of all old paint.
There is one coat of Minwax Wood Finish stain on it.
The can says it "Penetrates,Stains, & Seals"
What should I do next ?
The chair will be used everyday as a normal chair...
(not something to rest a transmission on)....
Thanks!!!

Even though the can says it seals you should still put a non yellowing polyurethanne on the piece for extra protection.

You've done well to seal the wood, now you must seal in the stain. Minwax also offers a fine line of Polyurethane products. Matte, Satin, Gloss and High Gloss. You choose. Also, it will deepen the look of the stain. Read the directions on the can. OR... they have other brands of spray polyurethane. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area while applying either. Enjoy the day.

Does MINWAX say "non-yellowing" on their cans or.... is there another way to differentiate it from "yellowing" ?

@UpState Basically, Minwax water based poly will stay clear - and my last can says it stays clear. Oil based poly will yellow and get a little darker over time. As Katrina said, it may not make a noticeable difference over wood stains, but you've already used a light golden color, so if you don't want to chance it becoming any yellower, then I'd stick with water based. If this was a penetrating brush on/wipe off stain as appears, then you do need to seal with one or the other - 1-2 coats is probably plenty for a chair.

The above postings offer excellent suggestions as to products. You will also need to decide on a gloss level, with the higher glosses offering a more modern look. I'd suggest a low gloss or matte finish for a traditional library chair.

You can also wax it with a clear or an antiquing wax. That is how I finish everything that I paint or stain, including chairs, wax.

For a chair with spindles and curves, I do use and recommend minwax 'wipe-on poly' especially for beginners because it's so easy to use. It comes in satin or gloss, and you can build up very light coats so it does not have that heavy polyurethane/plastic look and feel. If you use the satin, you can also finish up with a little wax to get a really soft antique kind of glow, or buff it up to a glossy vintage shellac-type shine. I use 300+ grit sponges (not blocks) to easily sand any detail between coats - goes fast on legs or turned ornament.

You could also use spray on acrylic poly non yellowing. Make sure water based like your stain. I used spray on Zinzer 123 primer and spray on topcoat for the spindles on a stair railing. Easy - no messing around spindles, no brush marks, etc.

@Marion Nesbitt Thank you, Mrs. Nesbitt from Canada...you always have good ideas ! Luckily / un-luckily this chair has pretty simple lines. For more ornate items I'll use your idea !

based on the picture of the can of stain, the stain is oil based. Generally speaking you should then follow with an oil based poly also from Minwax. You can use water based poly but the stained wood should be thoroughly dry. I normally wait about a week. Sometime mixing brands of stain and top coats (poly) can get you into trouble. I have encountered this before. Minwax does make a wipe-on water based poly that I like but it is not carried locally where I live so I had to order off of Amazon.

If I should accidentally sit a transmission on the chair would I still be able to refinish it a second time?

I'd use a wipe on Polyurethane in a satin finish. Easy peasy application. It is oil based but is a wonderful protective coating.
