Cabinet handle placement, urgent request-he's doing it now!!

Beth
by Beth
I couldn't be at home today when my dear husband planned to install the handles on our kitchen cabinets. I asked that he place them so the bottom of the handle would be even with the top of the horizontal shaker style trim. I was hoping that he would send me a picture BEFORE he screwed the first one on, but he sent the pictures AFTER he had attached it to one of the most prominent cabinets in the kitchen. As you can see from the picture, it is lower than I wanted. Am I being too picky in asking him to move it up so the bottom of the handle is even with the top of the cabinet trim? Or does it look okay the way it is? I know it's just a small difference but it's kind of making me nuts and he is willing to re-do it. He says he can fix the holes left by the first try. I would greatly appreciate some other opinions on the look of this.
Bottom of handle is below the top of the horizontal frame on the cabinet.

@Beth Hey sorry again after looking at the photo again it was definately the angle. Please no hard feelings.
  • Tammie ellerbee Tammie ellerbee on Dec 12, 2015
    Perfect!
    • Beth Beth on Dec 12, 2015
@Tammie ellerbee Oh thank you, that makes me feel much better! I was all worried about placement and the first comment I got said they were too big anyway; I nearly went 'round the bend :) It's taken me months to plan this kitchen after a fire destroyed our home so I'm probably paying a little too much attention to detail and being much too sensitive. I hate to even admit this but I bought the handles because they match the curved handles on the appliances.
  • Meredith Wouters Meredith Wouters on Dec 12, 2015
I do not think they're too low, nor do I think they're too big. They look elegant and graceful, and I like the way they just barely dip below the ledge. I think when they're all on, they'll look great! Send after pics!

      @Beth That's what I would do!
  • Leslie Lazzarini Leslie Lazzarini on Dec 12, 2015
Beth, I'm afraid you may be stuck with it, bless his heart. I would be ecstatic if my husband picked up any tool to fix something! I just redid my kitchen design and new cabinets and honestly had to look at them to remember where they were placed. I have become so oblivious to these little things in just 4 months.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 12, 2015
@Leslie Lazzarini I really like the way yours are placed! With those lovely glass doors you wouldn't want to be distracted by handles placed any higher.
  • Susan Bechamp Susan Bechamp on Dec 12, 2015
I wouldn't change the position either. Looks fine as is. It would look worse to have holes in the doors if he raised them higher.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 12, 2015
@Susan Bechamp I know you are right! I will likely not even notice the handles after a while but I would always see those holes. It's right next to the stove.
  • Maureen Maureen on Dec 12, 2015
They are fine. Do not change them. The holes would make you crazy. At least your husband does things.....
    • Beth Beth on Dec 12, 2015
@Maureen Yup..the holes would definitely end up bothering me more! Thank you.
  • Katrina Warren Katrina Warren on Dec 12, 2015
@Beth I know they aren't exactly where you wanted them, but they look fine & I think in a short while the placement would not bother you at all. I would leave them where they are as it's unlikely that the holes would be perfectly concealed even after filling sanding, painting etc... & at least for me that would bother me more than the handles staying where they are.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 12, 2015
@Katrina Warren Thank you, you are so right. I'm sure that over time it would be the holes I would notice and regret. The more I thought about drilling additional holes in those perfectly painted solid wood doors, the better the handles began to look :)
  • Marion Nesbitt Marion Nesbitt on Dec 13, 2015
Personally think they would look weird if placed higher.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Marion Nesbitt My husband thanks you! By the time I woke up the top cabinets were done!
  • Pam Walker Pam Walker on Dec 13, 2015
Sorry to say that you're like me, just being picky. I suffer from OCD & if I want them a certain way & my husband did it wrong by my standards, I'd just redo them myself & be done with'em or either I woulda marked where I wanted them first before turning over the project to him. :)

@Beth Oh ok lol. Yeah, sometimes they can be difficult lol. :)
  • Beth Burke-Rudd Beth Burke-Rudd on Dec 13, 2015
They are perfect where he placed them, as a less than tall person handles placed any higher are useless and just cause finger marks on the cabinets from people too short to reach the handle.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Beth Burke-Rudd Thank you! The uppers are done now and I think they look fine.
  • Kathy Kathy on Dec 13, 2015
I agree with most.. After a few weeks you wouldn't even notice they are a little low. I think they are just fine. In my experience the holes may be more noticeable. I Would prefer they looking perfect from an installation point of view than be raised up with holes filled in. Don't sweat the small stuff! What a nice husband who is willing to do whatever you want. Happy wife happy life! Lol
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Kathy Thanks so much. I'm sure the holes would be noticeable and that would really bother me. My husband has been great every step of the way sending pictures and offering to move it; in fact he seems oddly calm that I'm being so picky about this :) After 34 years, I guess he's used to my being so finicky and just takes it in stride.
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Dec 13, 2015
Let it go! The kitchen is done and it looks clean, new and great...what more is there to ask for? Great job! (And think of it this way...if the handle is easier for you to reach, you will not scratch up the painted finish with your fingernails!)
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Jeanette S Thanks for reining me in! I'm being much too picky. I re-designed the whole layout of the kitchen after a fire totaled the inside of the house and I was just so determined to get everything right. I had lived there for 15 years and wanted to make changes to that kitchen since we moved in. An unfortunate accident finally allowed me to do it and I wanted the "lemonade" I made out of lemons to be perfect. I think the whole fanatic, picky thing came from trying to keep my mind off what we lost.

If he's offering to redo it, & before he does them all... BRING THAT UP. But that's only me. I'd have to be looking at that & It would drive me nuts to! P.S. I love those handles.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Mickey B. & Boo Boo It's too late, the positive comments from last night prompted him to finish the uppers and they don't look too bad. See the pic I posted below. Thank you for your input, I'm glad you like the handles. I was so picky, I got them to match the handles on the appliances :)
  • Duv310660 Duv310660 on Dec 13, 2015
redrilling and patching 2 holes is not hard to do; he offered to do it; you've both learned to 'measure twice and drill once' (or at least check with your partner first!). Get them where you're sure you want them. That having said, your handles look ultra modern/sleek for such a simple rustic door design. But I am not seeing 'the big picture' - just close-ups!
  • Bonnie Bonnie on Dec 13, 2015
I'm in the minority I'm sure, but I think they actually look BETTER than they would if they were perfectly aligned with the trim (which would be too rigid in my opinion). Even so, I think Dan has a good point.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Bonnie Thank you. After the comments last night, I gave him the go-ahead for the placement the way he had it. The uppers are finished and I think they look good too now! I posted a picture of the uppers below.
  • Sheila D Sheila D on Dec 13, 2015
Seems if handles are at the top, might be too high to reach. Most home improvement stores show towards bottom of doors.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Sheila D Thanks for the advice! All the pictures I had seen of other kitchens had the handles lined up with the trim.
  • Jackie Gulick-Dunn Jackie Gulick-Dunn on Dec 13, 2015
I think it looks fine – – but if it was driving you nuts please have them fix it it will be worth it.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Jackie Gulick-Dunn He finished this morning after I read last nights comments to him and they do look fine. Thanks for comment!
  • Susan Proskin Susan Proskin on Dec 13, 2015
I think it looks fine, but if they were raised slightly then it would be more pleasing to the eye. It is often the little things that matter. Your husband sounds like a keeper.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Susan Proskin Well I better get used to them. I read the comments to him last night most of which said they looked fine so he got up early and finished. This might sound silly but they are exactly the same distance as the handles are from the bottom of the microwave so I'm placated by that :) (and now I'm really starting to sound like an OCD nut!)
  • Gar2275764 Gar2275764 on Dec 13, 2015
Looks like I'm the one in the minority, but to me it looks unbalanced, and it would nag at me every time I looked at it. I'd have to raise them.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Garfield919 Too late. My husband liked the comments posted last night which were mostly positive so he went ahead and finished this morning. I think the holes would have bothered me more. Take a look at the picture I posted below of the finished cabinets, I don't even really notice it now that they're all on.
  • L Murphy L Murphy on Dec 13, 2015

I'm glad that it helped! I'm looking forward to your post on the sponge drawer. It seems like both options have their benefits, but ease of use seems the better approach!
  • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
As you can see from the last picture I posted, my husband was emboldened by the answers I read him last night so he went ahead and did the rest in the original position. He is now asking where to put the drawer handles on the larger drawers. I bought all the same handles and my first thought was naturally to put them in the middle of the smaller drawers but what about the larger ones? I was thinking of putting the handles on the large drawers the same distance down from the top of the drawer as the small ones. Although they won't be in the middle, it would make for much less much bending over to open. Any thoughts on this new dilemma?
  • Johnnye Denman Johnnye Denman on Dec 13, 2015
Actually, it would make me nuts too being placed that low. The effect seems "off." If he was willing to re-do it and could fill the holes properly,I'd say to let him! However, I only saw this today, so my answer is too late! I hope you enjoy the cabinets as they are.
  • The uppers look perfectly fine. on the drawers, right in the middle is where they should be placed.
    • See 1 previous
    • @Beth I think so. everything should be one or the other. If you start placing the handles in different spots, it's going to look funny. On second look of the uppers, I think the bottom of the handle should be even with bottom of the inset. Does that make sense? The line of inner molding at the bottom. The eye should not have to bounce around. Hard to explain while typing! But then again, it's a personal preference. I do not think the handles above should have been higher though.

Your husband is helping you! It looks fine. If you criticize him he will not help you in the future. Many wives would die to have a diy husband.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Charro534 Yes, he's a good man and you're certainly right, criticism never works especially when he tries so hard to make things nice for me!
  • Sheila D Sheila D on Dec 13, 2015
Hubby, made a decision that looks great. If anyone is going to add new handles, try some double stick tape and try out a couple of locations on the doors.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Sheila D Thank you Sheila. I had marked them but the handles were measured in centimeters and the template he had was in inches. It's finished now and looks just fine.
  • Jean Quintana Jean Quintana on Dec 13, 2015
I think they look fine too. I love the shaker cabinets.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Jean Quintana Thank you, I'm glad you like the cabinets! The handles are on and they make the shaker cabinets look more modern which was my goal. The cabinets are really a bit too tall for such a small kitchen and I thought the handles might distract from that.
  • L_j2622658 L_j2622658 on Dec 13, 2015
It is your kitchen. I imagine you will spend much more time there than he will. You need to be comfortable and not walk in every day seeing something that "jars" you. Besides your husband sounds great---willing to put the handles anywhere you wish. Move the handle!
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@L_jarrette Can't change them now, it's too late. He likes to finish something once he's started and based on comments I received last night saying they looked good, I gave him the go-ahead rather than make more holes in the wood. I'm embarrassed to say this, but he does all the cooking too. It's not that I can't cook or don't like to, it's just that my job takes me far away and sometimes for days at a time. He gets home earlier than I do and loves to cook and he likes the way it looks so as long as he's happy, I'm fed :) He is great! We're celebrating 32 years married next week, I can't imagine how he's put up with my finicky self this long.
  • Connie Connie on Dec 13, 2015
If he is willing to accommodate you, then please allow him to move it. Otherwise, I am sure that he will hear about it again & again. Just make the move and get it over with so that both of you have some peace.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Connie A lot of folks thought it looked fine where it was, I gave him the go-ahead because I didn't want extra holes in the wood either. They're all installed in the original position, I think they look fine and my lips are sealed.
  • Lesley Lesley on Dec 13, 2015
Yep, move them. I would be the same, they need to be 'just so' and lets face it, you will spend more time in there than him. And I bet he will appreciate how thankful you will be.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Lesley He started this last night and really likes to finish things. Previous comments said it looked good and I was worried about holes in the wood so I gave him the thumbs up to finish. Due to my job, he does all the cooking anyway so I am happy if he is.
  • Lori Lori on Dec 13, 2015
If you hadn't said what the problem was, I wouldn't know. They are totally fine and just be thankful he made them all the same, mine would have just eyeballed them with his crooked eye.
  • Charro Charro on Dec 13, 2015
I think I sounded more harsh than I meant it to and more than you deserved. I was just trying to teach from my own hard learned lessons...😉
    • Beth Beth on Dec 13, 2015
@Charro534 Oh no, I didn't take your comment as being harsh, I was just agreeing with you! I too learned long ago that I get more bees with honey :) He knows I'm finicky (but not critical) and realized after he put on the first one that it wasn't quite where I wanted it so he sent me a picture before doing the rest. He was thrilled when I read him the comments about how lucky I was to have a DIY husband, thank you for making his day!
  • Connie Connie on Dec 13, 2015
Glad it all worked out for you. Cabinets look good.
  • LD LD on Dec 13, 2015
Considering the size of the handle, the placement looks fine.
  • L_j2622658 L_j2622658 on Dec 14, 2015
Essentially my thoughts are the same. Whatever you are happy and comfortable with in your kitchen, is all that matters. And again, your husband sounds great with a capital G!
  • When I overthink all these kinds of decisions (and boy, do i!) i stop and ask myself when was the last time I ever noticed it anywhere else. Turns out I rarely, if ever, do.
  • Jeani Miller Miner Jeani Miller Miner on Dec 14, 2015
some things don't matter, but some things, like this that you see every single day do matter. I'd ask him to re-position. One thing to be certain of is the the handles aren't too close to the door edges or you won't be able to get your fingers in between them.
  • Cris Cris on Dec 14, 2015
I would be so grateful if my husband would do some or one of the things I need done around the house but I love him for all the other things he has done throughout the years. Cris

I think you are being too picky. Since the handle has already been installed, if your husband moves it up, what are you going to do with the other hole? Just saying, there are more important things to worry about during the holidays. Happy New Year.
    • Beth Beth on Dec 31, 2015
@Liliana Wells You are right, I am way too much of what I prefer to call a perfectionist :) but my family knows how I am and loves me anyway (thankfully). This post was from well before the holidays and I thought I had marked it resolved. We did go with the original placement and it looks lovely! Thank you and Happy New Year!
  • Lori E Dunbar Lori E Dunbar on Oct 30, 2016
At first, I was going to comment that it didn't matter (a year later), but when I was the comparison, I think you were right to have them moved up.
