Scotch Broom.... I so love the smell I hope it can be saved? It was flooded by salt water and whatever else the bay brought in with it. Can I prune this ?? It was perfectly fine until the last month or so. I know some one here knows what to do! Y'all are always so helpful :)

BTW if I cut away all the dead and or dying parts I will have cut away more than 1/2 the plant I think

I would give it a few more weeks into spring and see how much is left of it, then cut it back based on that.

Kathleen, this may not all have been the result of the flooding, it also can have a lot to do with wind damage. Heavy winds also will kill off plants with the prevailing wind side taking most of the brunt of the damage. And seeing the winds came from the east may explain what has happened.

Broom is a pretty tough plant. I would definitely wait and see how it comes out, and not worry about the amount you need to take off.

I had a small one in front of my house, and it was the ONLY plant in my yard that I actually wrapped up for the winter. I got TONS of snow and wind and it took a beating the first year, I thought it was a gonner! I would wait until it starts to sprout, then cut off dead wood. As the plant grows and gets healthy again, you can continue to trim off any dead areas to make room for new growth!
