Redoing an old sewing table has been on my list a long time. I never painted or stained or varnished the old empty table around the house for years. But some timely gifts from Hometalk.com and budget buys presented the best opportunity.
Step 1. Sanding the top. My son and I hand sanded the top and inside top of the machine.
Step 2. Dyeing the top. Use some Blue Ultra-dye I got from Hometalk.com, I brushed this navy blue dye, following the grain. I put on two coats with a paintbrush. Freckles are free if you come get them. 😁
Step 3. Drying. This is the hardest part—waiting. I waited two days to be sure the dye was dry. I gave each new step a day to dry. I painted all the rest a beige labeled Misstint $1.
Step 4. Next I used a plastic stencil I ordered from Wish.com to decorate two corners of the lid. I used Unicorn SPiT in White Ning and a stipple brush. When I finished one corner, I washed the stencil in the sink with plain water, dried it completely, then did the opposite corner.
Step 5. I used a tiny amount of navy blue 99c craft paint from Walmart, but I couldn’t read the label. I stenciled a detail from the doily pattern so that it coordinated. If you look very closely at the white stenciling, you will see tiny brush marks on the edges that look like real thread.
Step 6. My son stepped in again to help me distress the edges of the legs and other parts. I had painted two drawers in Misstint, and had not gotten around to the other two drawers. My husband was trying to help and put the two unpainted drawers in the table, but cattycornered from each other. Just what I was aiming for and didn’t know it! Soon I will add a coat of polyurethane for protection, but I really like how it looks now. With polyurethane, the stenciled doilies will look like decoupaged doilies. It already fooled my daughter-in-law!
And this is my Sweetie Pie, all redone, using: sanding, dyeing, painting, stenciling, distressing, and someday sealing. Time does not include waiting, I mean drying, time.
