Reclaimed Table Top Cheese Boards

Back in the summer, I took apart an old drop leaf table and re-used the base to make a new farmhouse table. There were three large pieces of solid oak from the table top, but they were warped and stained. But I knew that these would make something great with a bit of woodworking skills. Cut down, sanded and protected, I now have four vintage wood cheese boards from just one panel.
My husband is always telling me to save wood from old furniture pieces I've used for another project. This time, he was right! (but don't tell him or I'll never live it down).
We cut four boards approximately 7" x 18" from one side of the drop leaf table top. The wood was in really rough shape as you can see.
Nothing a run through a planer couldn't fix. It took off just enough of the dirty outer layer of wood to reveal new wood underneath.
Once it was sanded, the corners rounded and nice and smooth, I stenciled "cheese" onto one corner just to make sure everyone knew what the board was intended for.
In order to use this as a cheese board, the finish needs to be food friendly. I mixed up a special coating (recipe on blog) and gave it a couple of coats. Now it's ready for gift giving! I think I'll keep one for myself though.
