DIY Pillow Cover Overlay

A Ballard Designs inspired project sewing project.
This month has been extremely busy so I didn't have a lot of time for Christmas projects. I did manage to make these DIY Pillow Cover Overlays. This is a simple sewing project even for me. I also love that it is an inexpensive alternative to changing out pillows and pillow covers throughout the changing seasons.
I started off with selecting 1 1/2 yard of inexpensive red and white fabric and 2 rolls red grosgrain ribbon that I picked up at Hobby Lobby. The fabric reminded me of candy canes and would be a nice Christmas addition to our grey and white guest room.
Once the fabric and ribbon were cut to size, I folded the fabric over on each side 1 inch and secured the hem with straight pins. Then I added 2 pieces of the ribbon on each side about 3-4 inches from each corner. I was careful to ensure that the ribbon aligned on the opposite side. For the back portion of pillow overlay, I aligned the ribbon with the front overlay to ensure that the ties were even and would meet when attached to the pillow.

I then used a simple straight stitch (basically the only one that I know) to secure the ribbon to the fabric and for the finished seam. I am an impatient sewer and did this all in one step.
After sewing the pillow overlays, I placed them on the front and back side of the pillow and tied the ribbons in a simple bow.
