How can we polish out scratches in marble countertop?

We used the wrong cleaner in a small area of a bathroom countertop, leaving an etched area. In an effort to polish the etched area, we scratched the area. Now what can we do to make that area shiny again?

I'd phone a marble supply company. They are often willing to give free advice on a product they deal with.

If the rest of the marble is highly polished you need someone to come in and repolish it professionally as they will have the tool and the diamond pads to do this. If the finish is smooth but not polished you can do this yourself by resanding the whole piece. Start with a medium grade sandpaper and work up to a really fine grade - as fine as you can buy - 400 grit at least. If this is not marble but granite - then it will be much too hard to polish out any of the scratches this way. Good luck

When I'm working with stone to make cabochons for my jewelry it takes lots of practice to use progressively finer grit diamond sand paper and then a polishing compound at the end. I'm an avid diyer but I'm going to suggest you leave this one to the professionals. They can come in and buff out the bad spot and make it look like it never existed. They have been working with the material for years. It is really too difficult to fix it correctly with polymers that yellow or other stop gap processes. The few,dollars,you spend now will be well worth it!

I work at a Marble/Granite company and the only thing I have heard to use for cleaning, other than water, is Soft Scrub Gel.

I only know how you can get water rings to disappear on marble, but maybe that will help someone one day: buff with mayonnaise is what I was told years ago.
