High Utility Bills Are a Choice! Energy Reduction and $15k

Are you paying utility bills on auto-pay each month? Next month we challenge you to open up your energy bill envelope with a calculator in hand. Now, before you write your check to the local power company, take that bill's total amount due and figure out how much you will be spending in a 10 year time frame (multiply the bill amount by 12 months and then 10 years). For example, a $125 dollar utility bill x 12 months is $1,500 dollars spent on home energy in 1 year. Next, multiply $1,500 dollars by 10 years for the 10 year total ($15,000 dollars).
If your monthly utility bill is $125 dollars you can expect to pay a total of $15,000 dollars over 10 years! What bothers us the most is that there are numerous solutions to substantially reduce a utility bill, yet most people are in the habit of accepting their monthly bill amounts and having them automatically deducted from their bank accounts.
Out of sight, out of mind
When you calculate the whopping number of what you will be paying over the next 10 years, you can panic, like most people, or instead you can realize that it's time to start a path toward energy reduction and eventual energy independence. The point of our illustration is that there is hope, and a solution, to reduce your electric bill. Homeowners like yourself have a choice – all you need to do is set up your home to be more energy efficient. We selected 10 years as a benchmark for this article on utility bills for a reason – It has been reported that the average homeowner in the US will now live in a home 11+ years.
We picked our 10 year calculation period as a fair and easy number to use. In addition, housing market experts have traditionally estimated that the best investment time frame to sell a home averages over a ten year period. Currently, there are vast amounts of upside-down mortgages in the United States, so most homeowners are remaining in their homes for longer periods of time. The 'gold rush' of flipping homes has ended.
Targeting home energy improvement products to wheel in those high utility bills is easier than you may expect. We recommend having an energy consultant come in to help evaluate your home and its overall level of energy efficiency (or inefficiency). An energy consultant will look at your lights, attic insulation, windows and a few other high energy draws like common where drafts occur or electricity is not being managed properly. Once they have gathered specific information about your home and its energy usage condition, energy consultants will tell how your utility bill compares to others and let you know what options are available to improve your situation. Home energy experts may suggest Energy Star-rated replacement windows that can save up to 25% a month on high utility bills, or maybe solar attic fans that remove heat from an attic and can save up to 10% a month. An energy consultant's ultimate goal is not to sell unnecessary products or services to you, but to help you reduce overall energy usage in the home with products that will save you money and pay for themselves
.Paying excessively high home utility bills each month is your choice. Many people have woken up and realized they can invest money toward home energy efficiency today and get that dollar amount returned in a short period of time. A home energy solution can be an investment that alleviates your headache when that dreaded utility bill arrives each month. And, as our 10 year utility bill example showed, a home energy solution can definitely save you lots of money.
So what steps are you going to take at your home to save $15,000 dollars?

good article, though ONE point of clarity: Depending on your utilities for Heat and A/C, the bills tend to vary by season. My winter electric bill is approx $90-$100, though my summer bill is $300-$350+. Gas in the winter=approx $150, whereas summer is $less then $30.
