Maybe not in all parts of the country, but Atlanta is going through warmer than normal period now.

It's good news for gardeners but bad news for scales and mites because now is a great time to spray them with horticultural oil. The oil suffocates the pests and then disappears. Be sure to read the label before using. Note the warning NOT to apply if temperatures are below freezing.

    I kind of wish that were our problem here. Either I'm getting wimpy or this has been an unusually cold winter. We have had snow on the ground in part of our yard since before Halloween. Very unusual, despite Colorado's snowy reputation.
