Looking for something to use as a pantry

Question

I am looking for an idea for a small space. My son has almost NO kitchen storage, I thought a free standing storage unit of some sort would be a great idea. I am looking for something stylish with GREAT storage possibilities..

Remove the drawers from a vintage dresser, add a top and some shelves and you've created an adorable kitchen island with lots of underneath storage! You can get tall old entertainment cabinets for a song at thriftstores. Paint and customize! Shelves, magnetic strips for spice storage...check out Ikea storage.

Old TV cabibets or armoires make great pantries. Just add an extra shelf or two.

I use wire drawers and the rack that they fit in. I think that it is made by closetmaid. When I bought mine years ago they sold the parts separately so I bought different height drawers to fit my stuff. I put the casters on mine so that they can be moved around if needed and there is a plastic top that I purchased so that stuff can be stacked on top as well. You can buy connectors so that the shorter units can be stacked to make a taller unit. I have a set with large baskets that i use to sort laundry as well. I really like them. Mine are white coated wire and has kind of industrial look. Mine are in a basement but I think they would also fit in a closet to hide away if that is not your idea of 'stylish'. I love the look but it might not be for everyone. :)

Sometimes you can pick up old metal cabinets or lockers at garage sales. If you find a tall narrow one, it could be cleaned and painted and used as a pantry.

I use a tall DVD rack that I got from Walmart. (Mainstays Multimedia Storage $27.88) It is narrow and not too deep so nothing gets lost on it. Still able to fit cans 2 deep. I use baskets from the dollar store for smaller items. Surprisingly fits a lot.

A bakers rack or bookshelf with baskets to fit on the shelves can hide all sorts of stuff you need handy but out of sight.

I had that problem once. If he has his dinner wear that matches you can put it all on an open shelf and it will look nice in free up some cabinet space.

I use a small IKEA made buffet and hutch - wasn't the cheapest but it holds a lot, inc. a microwave.

Online I have seen beautiful pantries made from entertainment units. I also needed the extra storage but I didn't have the space or skills that they took. For about six months I watched Craigslist until I found the perfect one. It has full length double doors,, four roomy drawers at the bottom plus the space for a large tv came with an extra shelf. So now I have room to spare in my cabinets. Just search 'entertainment units up-cycle to pantry' and you find every size and simple to complex. Good luck!

almost all re-sale/thrift stores have armoirs now. They come in all sizes and shelves can be added if there aren't enough. Cheap and easy and storage behind doors is the way to go, to avoid the look of clutter in a small space.

You might wish to go to your local Habitat for Humanity Resale store. They have all types of used & new donated items that can be recycled into whatever you're looking for. Search the Good Will, Volunteers of America, Salvation Army, junk stores flea markets. Think out of the box. I've seen drawers attached to walls as shelves, cookie sheets, old countertop material, etc. Good luck & God Bless!

I have used a TALL BOOKCASE in my kitchen in the past, curtains can be hung across the front to hide the clutter or if he is super neat can be left open.
