Is it okay to fertilize potted plants all year?

Janet Pizaro on Jan 03, 2016That depends on where you live as the care for house plants are very different from state to state.Helpful Reply

Barb on Jan 03, 2016I do use liquid fertilizer with my violets monthly. You put it in the water, which is always watered from the bottom dish under them.Helpful Reply

Lucy Nunn on Jan 03, 2016I always dissolve a little miracle-gro in my watering can (which is a recycled orange juice container). Seems to keep stuff healthy year round. House plants and porch plants.Helpful Reply

Shawn Brockhoff Maxwell on Jan 03, 2016Go easy in the winter months as they generally do not need. Same with the watering. So many plants, so many zones - difficult to answer. But be aware the the salts from commercial fertilizers will build up in the soil. You might want to use worm castings or compost - neither of which should have any odor. Contact your local extension office (usually university based with up-to-date information)Helpful Reply

Victoria Cross on Jan 03, 2016As others have said, it depends on what growing zone you live in, along with the type of plants and whether you fertilize with every watering or on a schedule. I use "compost tea" that I get from my CSA, you can usually find bottles of it in the early spring at farmer's markets. I personally don't fertilize in the winter since plants go into a resting mode with the longer nights. And I would definitely stay away from commercial fertilizer blends too.Helpful Reply
