They aren't supposed to bloom yet are they? I even have some crocuses and daylillies trying to pop up. This darn weather. Is anything going to be left when Spring gets here?
Whoa .. so this is what happens when you post via a smartphone? Anyway, I was whining about my camelias blooming already. It's going to get cold again. I've got some crocuses and what looks to be daylillies cropping up too. Is there going to be anything left for Spring if things bloom now?
Teressa, lot's of us are concerned about the "early spring" this year.Your camellia blooms are lovely. At my house (Anne) I'd cut one and float it in a container in the bathroom - so guests wouldn't notice I hadn't mopped the floor. Flowering quince are in full bloom, daffodils are blooming, most of the ones I count on for March camellia show entries have already bloomed and one Dogwood is showing color. Good gardeners just enjoy what comes along and then take care of the problems that

some of these early blooms may cause later in the year when we are sure of what damage may have occurred.
I agree with Mike and Anne that you really have no choice but to enjoy the early blooms. And I'll bet their will still be plenty of things to admire when spring really does come around.
I'll enjoy it while it lasts ... I'm still pouting though 'cuz i think its going to get cold before all my buds bloom and then they will die. *sigh This will be my 3rd spring in this house. The first year was spectacular! And I started learning about all the cool things I had in the yard and then last year wasn't as spectacular but I got a kick out of what did bloom and I even planted some stuff. Some survived and some didn't. Who would have guessed I'd be so touchy about plants? *sniff, sniff
Your camellia blooms are beautiful. I only have two blooms & many buds. I think these plants in Florida like the cold - just not too much cold. Thanks for posting.
I'VE GOT SOME NICE LOOKING BUDS ON 3 OF MIND THAT HAVE NEVER BLOOMED ! I HAVE SEVERAL AREAS PLANTED WITH DAFFODILS AND ONE SPOT HAS SPROUTS OF GREEN . AND I SELDOM GET REBLOOMING TULIPS , BUT ONE BED HAS ABOUT AN INCH OF GREEN PEEKING THERE HEADS OUT !
Same happening over here, my camellia bush is in full bloom. It looks amazing and stuff is popping out of the ground everywhere. Hope Feb doesn't do its usual freeze and kill everything.
No worries on the daffodils putting up foliage and even buds. In my experience they tend to be hardy types that can handle some of the extreme flucuations we get in Georgia (with the weather)
Moved my one and only camelia last spring...the buds look good; fingers crossed. I was told they would not grow well here in good old 9B. But it seems to love the light shade near my front door.Considering buying more-any central Floridians with good tips would be appreciated!
I don't bother with a compost pile-I just put my coffee grounds, egg shells and kitchen waste right under the mulch around my plants. My Grandma did the same-old idea that works!
@Karen: I recently went to a Master Gardener presentation on camellias and azaleas for Central Florida. They recommended sasanquas over japonicas and cautioned to avoid late-season varieties because it is usually hot enough here by the time those bloom that the blooms don't last long.
@doug--funny you mentioned master gardening: I just started the certification training in Indian River County (FL). I'm really looking forward to filling in my knowledge gaps when it comes to plants!
Here in the very South of Atlanta, I've seen many that are blooming. Careful... they may have been tricked by the unusual weather patterns (warm then cold then warm...).
Hope we don't have a freak freeze over the next several weeks.
I have daffodils that shouldn't have come up for another six to eight weeks and they've already pushed out of the ground... YIKES!
Karen M and Douglas-Master Gardeners are a fantastic bunch of people; I've had a great time this past 8 years. You'll learn so much and make great friends. Not to mention the free plants you will get in swaps with other MG's. And, Douglas-I'll try the sasanquas when I buy a new camelia!
I have a gardening friend in Willow, Alaska and he has to resort to ice sculptures in the winter. I'll stick with camellias blooming early!
Hope we don't have a freak freeze over the next several weeks.
