We have an area around our pool deck that has Asian Jasmine.For years it has been perfect, but after our 2 years of severe drought, it is just sparse.Last summer took plugs of it and tried to fill in, but it isn't working.I was wondering what else I could do or plant with the remaining jasmine to fill in. It is all sun.Thank you for any suggestions.

Last year was a difficult year for anything in the ground here to thrive. I think I would give it another go, maybe using some larger plants if you can. Keep a close eye on the watering. Remember first year they sleep, second year they creep third year they leap.

Four Seasons Nursery, I agree that there have been some very difficult years. I am now retired and not able to put in 5-6 hours a day in the yard. Also, I cannot afford to water...it runs us over $250 a month just to sprinkle some. And I cannot afford to replant. That is why I am going to drought resistant, decorative grasses. I can get a variety of color and then add in a few flowers for color. I plan to plant the flowers in buckets and put them in the ground. That way I can selectively water them. I face directly west and things just get cooked. Even the plants on the back deck in pots get cooked from the heat alone despite the watering and shade.

I thought Asiatic jasmine was happier with some shade. I think it would take a great deal of water to keep it going in full sun in Texas. What about something like trailing indigo bush (Dalea greggii) as a drought-tolerant alternative?

Douglas, our Jasmine was established over 25 yrs. ago and we never had a problem.I will have to look up trailing indigo bush, not sure what it looks like.I am all for drought tolerant plants.I am slowly replacing with them.

Yes, Jeanette, I need to get my water bill down, it has been creeping up. The grasses you mention, is a good idea, but the area connects with our patio, so anything tall would be blocking our immediate vies to pool, plus , not sure about short plants.I thank you for giving me something to consider.

I think the two might work well together, Judith, but trailing indigo bush is not a plant I have grown (it sounds like a great plant, but probably wouldn't like our humid summers in Florida), so I would consult with a good local nursery.
