Jeanette S on Apr 01, 2013Plug in a fan. Get a box fan, sit it at the end of the porch to blow toward where you are sitting and you won't be bothered. This works for garden parties, BBQs, etc. Set out box fans. Be sure and use outside extension cords. To keep down Mosquitoes and other flying insects, spray your yard with a mix of half and half lemon scented dish washing liquid and lemon scented ammonia. Place mixture in garden hose attached sprayer and turn on water. When suds stop, refill. Spray underside of bushes. And spray edge of roof so it will go down gutters. We had them so bad we could not walk 65 ft to mailbox without getting dozens of bites. This lasts for weeks. We do it about twice a season. No problem now.Helpful Reply

SLS Construction & Building Solutions LLC on Apr 01, 2013+1 on the fan & thanks @Jeanette S I will have to try that mix - I got to ask though, are there any side effects to using this (plants, pets, furniture?) To add to the conversation, make sure you also eliminate water sources allowing them to breed, buckets, water stuck in gutters, stagnant ponds, etc... If you do have a pond make sure there is moving water.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Apr 02, 2013SLS, as for the mix, we do not use it on furniture because my furniture is metal with cloth cushions and I don't know if it will affect them...I am usually cautious about putting anythng on my furniture anyway. But as for all other things, no problems at all. I do not have any exhotic plants that need special care...just standard varieties and Zoysia grass...no problems. and with the water sparayer, it is rather diluted. We do not do this but about every 6 weeks. And hubby is fanatic about emptying out standing water after I water the plants. (I suspect that is one reason they wilt so quickly--so I will try the Listerine trick this year...in fact I am going to clip this post so I won't lose this tip!)Helpful Reply

Fill bottle with water. Shake. Spray on yourself and around the areas you want them to avoid.Helpful Reply

SHELIA K on Apr 05, 2013Save used dryer sheets. Rub your hands with one, or just stick some in your pockets before you go out, maybe one under your hat, etc. Also, I heard that mosquitoes do not like BASIL. I haven't tried this but maybe....Helpful Reply
