April – Spring Cleaning / Maintenance Checklist

Wow has Spring finally arrived? As most people are ready to get outside & start working on the garden & give their house a good cleaning after being cooped up in it for so long, this months "maintenance" list is pretty short. So with that in mind let me also add in a few "spring cleaning" tips so one can go enjoy the outside before we start grumbling about it being too hot.
· Besides changing your ceiling fans over to "summer mode" now is a good time to switch out your winter bedding and replace it with lighter sheets and blankets.
· Before storing away your winter bedding, make sure you clean them properly and inspect them for damage. Old damaged towels and sheets make excellent rags.
· Consider using large airtight bags that can have the air vacuumed out - these are good at keeping dust & critters off & out of them
· Work from the top down when it comes dusting, vacuuming or washing down items like the walls.
· Consider hiring a professional cleaner for the windows, window coverings, carpets and upholstery – in many cases they will not only save you time, but be able to do a better job.
· It is also time to put away your winter clothes and replace them with your summer clothes.
· Consider donating clothes that don't fit, probably won't wear or didn't wear this last winter or summer
· While moving & cleaning everything out set aside garage sale items, drop off donations, and haul garbage to the dump or dumpster.
· Make sure when you are putting things back, that you don't block your AC vents as they only work properly by "throwing" the air
· Along those lines make sure you right down any trouble areas you had during the winter & consider getting an energy audit done which should include testing your duct system for leaks (getting this fixed could mean less dusting)

Flip that switch on your ceiling fans to summer mode, check all the screws & wipe down the blades. Just remember to turn it off when you leave the room as it only help cools you when you are in the room.
Besides changing out the filter, it is time to get your AC system serviced, so that when it is needed it works.
Don't forget to check your smoke & CO detector batteries
