Andria on Dec 24, 2013I made this laundry detergent yesterday. I did make a couple changes to the recipe. Here is what I used and what I think the cost was (I am going to go to WalMart and actually check what the products cost. 1 1/2 bars Fels Naptha bar soap ($1.99 a bar for a total of $2.98) 1 bar of pink Zote soap ($1.79) 1 box of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda 3lb 7 oz ($3.24) 1 box 20 Mule Team Borax 4lb 12 oz ($5.19) 1 large container of Oxy Clean 3lb ($7.52) 1 4lb box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda ($3.47) 1 28oz of Purex Crystals ($4.76) I started out with 1 bar of the Fels Naptha and 1 bar of Zote. I placed them in the freezer for about 2 1/2 hours before grating my hand. I used one of the hand-held, box style graters (I purchased one to use just for making the laundry detergent. I paid approximately $8.99 at WalMart. I then added another 1/2 bar of the Fels Naptha and I didn't freeze that one. I don't think freezing made a difference. I thought it might help "harden" the soap making it easier to grate. I pour all the ingredients into a clean bucket and mixed well. I then poured the mixture into a 2 gallon glass container purchased at WalMart for around $10.00 and added a stainless steel coffee scoop for around $4.00. Ultra Tide Vivid costs approximately $0.22 a load. I totaled the cost for my home made version, but did not add the costs for the container, the scoop, or the grater since they need not be purchased each time. I feel I spent about 30 min making the mixture and added $12 cost for my time. I estimate that the cost of my version is $0.17 a load if I use 2 tablespoons of detergent
