This our native plant has been reproduced all over the world. It's oil is second only to the olive in desirability.

Deborah, some sunflowers (not sure which specific varieties) follow the sun across the sky during the day. You can actually watch it happen as you drive across Kansas (one of the best things to watch while driving across Kansas. The other is the "Welcome to Town" billboards that invariably tout some bronze Olympic medalist or something that came from the town - and I'm not knocking it. The only thing on our signs in Colorado is the elevation. Yawn).

Not only does it have a great taste but it can be used to fry without burning. The best potato chips are made this way.

Spectacular. I adore Sunflowers, both to look at and to eat their seeds. They used to grow them on the base at Great Lakes and my dad would give me some seeds to eat when I was a very little girl. I used to ask him to lift me up so I could smell them too. lol

I planted mixed seeds and I didn't have to plant another sunflower for 5 years. After the 2nd year they reverted back to their origin but were still beauiful. Doing it again this year. Nothing like seeing a male cardinal feasting on the seeds!
