My first share -- I wanted something a little nicer and more permanent than a baby gate to try and keep our three dogs

out of the living room. (One of the dogs is old and has ... problems of the floor-ruining sort.) I'd bought these old shutters at a yard sale a few months back and by attaching two and a half of them together and securing them at the top and bottom with trim, they made a perfect gate. Took less than an hour start to finish.

going to use my "found" shutters for a gate like that to keep my grandson frm falling down the basement steps! We are tired of climbing baby gates all day! and I'm too old : (

i like this idea and i need to close off a window in our kitchen at our church gym so i just e-mailed our kitchen crew about using some old shutters at our habitat store if they are still there. they are from our old courthouse that burned last year. hope they are thereif now will keep looking.

What a great idea. Attractive and taking care of business at the same time.

Bet the dogs are happier too.

Looks nice, but my dogs are welcome in my livingroom most of the time. When they aren't, I wouldn't put up a gate that prevents them from being seen or to see on the other side. I would seriously hate to clean the piddle off of these when my dogs became upset and demonstrated their displeasure with being shut off from the family.

I'm so going to use this for the front porch to help keep the neighborhood critters off my porch. They would be welcome if the didn't spray the furniture.

Oh I like this! This would be great to keep our dog from running to the door everytime someone comes a knocking or to keep her away from the cats food.

Really like this idea! Our dogs are allowed in the living area when we are home but not when we are away so this would help a lot! Thanks for sharing

Could you tell me how you did it? I have a bunch of old shutters in the garage I could use.....is there a way to walk through or is it step over? How is is anchored in the doorway?

This is a great idea. It is FASHIONABLE. Anyone with aging dogs knows that they have issues no matter how house trained they are, We recently re-decorated our living room and dining room and I don't want my pack in there anyway. Went with white carpet and dark furntiure. This fantastic idea looks good, is functional and isn't a problem to spray off with the hose...in the event of a displeasure!!!

I had to use a baracade of dinning room chairs when I mopped the floor in the kitchen & dinning room to keep our 4 legged kid off the floor until it was dry. she had free roam of the house except when I was cleaning. We use gates to keep 2 legged children safe so why not keep our 4 legged ones safe. She is no longer with us in the physical world but our hearts will always be hers.

It was super easy to do. The boards at the top and bottom are just furring strips. I predrilled through the furring strips into the shutter and simply made a solid frame out of it. You can't see it but on the bottom board I put a rolling caster to support the weight of the door because it's pretty wide and heavy and I knew it would eventually sag. It's attached on one side with regular gate hinges and there's an eye-hook latch on the other end to hold it shut. I can't say what a difference ...»
it's made in our house. We can order pizza without the delivery guy getting assaulted by our dogs. People can come in our house without worrying that that the dogs are going to slip past them and out into the street. This year, my Christmas tree didn't get that extra little watering the Chewie liked to provide. It's been nice.

So much neater than a regular pet/child gate.

That would also work for restricting small toddlers...great idea. Wish I'd seen it before I spent hundreds of dollars on gates to keep my Shelties out of the living room.

Have you ever tried to recycle the rails from baby cribs? I am fortunate that all I have to do is prop it in place and my critters don't mess with it. I picked up some rails in my neighborhood on trash day. They will also slip in side the railings to prevent a dog from going up the stairs.
