Why I'll Never Let My Kids Paint Their Room Their Favorite Color

by Bright Green Door
In the past three years we have bought and sold four houses. In each one of these houses I have decorated our "girl room" and "boys room" to create a space that my kids love. Typically kids want to choose bright colors or their favorite color for their bedroom. I am a firm believer in painting a kids bedroom neutral and then accenting it with their favorite colors.
By painting kids rooms neutral it allows you to easily change their decor, without having to repaint every time their favorite color changes. Coming from experience, it also helps a lot with resale. (Gallery Wall= http://www.brightgreendoor.com/vintage-modern-girl-gallery-wall/)
It also allows you to use bright accents without feeling like you are stepping into a rainbow! Can you imagine these pink curtains if the walls were purple or pink?!
This boys room was an example of using bright bedding and fun wall decor to bring the neutral paint color to life.

In this room I didn't have to worry about the bold striped curtains competing with any paint colors. So next time you're considering painting your kids rooms their favorite color, instead why don't you consider going neutral and accenting with their favorite color?! If I walked into these rooms, I would immediately see that I would need to re-paint everything AFTER I repaired so many wall holes from all the stuff hanging on the wall. Unless everything is hung with command products?

How realistic is it for the average homeowner to buy and sell a home on an average of one every 1.1/4 year? Of course it makes sense in your case but when the ultimate goal is to make home a haven, it is of upmost importance to create the sense of belonging and consistency. Allowing children to choose the colors comfortable to them, gives them the sense of empowerment as individuals and tells them you value them as important contributors to the general welfare of the family.

I do see your logic, and yet...changing paint is easy and cheap. Years ago when my sister was a teen, she really wanted to paint her bedroom mauve (favorite color). My mom refused to allow it, which I think was because of similar reasons to yours: we had moved quite frequently when I was growing up, and we were sort of "trained" to keep the walls neutral off-white so it would be instantly ready to sell. Well, now that she is grown and gone, my mom expressed a regret to me that she should have just allowed her to paint her room whatever color she liked, because after all, it would have cost very little to buy a can of paint and a roller, and probably would have been only a few hours of time, yet it would have made her really happy. The decades of living in a variety of houses, all with the same BORING white walls, seems like a waste in hindsight. The price of a can of paint is not that much compared to changing curtains, pillows, bedspreads, etc. when you change your decorating taste: in the end, you may actually save money! It's also not that much to buy that can of neutral colored paint when you know you will need to put the house up for sale.

@Andrea R I agree, paint is cheaper than any accessories, furniture, etc.. Even an expensive gallon of self priming top brand paint is cheaper than a new bed spread! :) That paint covers anything!
