Old Map Art

I love old stuff!! I love using found objects as decor. I love the story/history behind all the stuff in my house. But sometimes I want "art" but it must have a story or meaning. When I saw this cool map of Paris I was intrigued. BUT I am NOT from Paris I am from South Louisiana and I love my culture. So I decided to make my own. With my sweet husbands help.
This is a pic of the original that sparked this project. At first I was planning on buying an old map and cutting it up. This did not work because the size and scale of the maps I found were to small. I found images of old maps and printed them out and then cut them up to see if this could work. It seemed to be doable.
I showed my hubby the idea and he is pretty tech savvy. He has a printer that can print up to 18x15. He then downloaded a pic of a map and proceeded to print it in sections. PLEASE PLEASE if at all possible make your scale be a standard frame size!!!!! Do not get custom framing!!! I mistakenly thought that the Michaels 75% off framing sale had to be a good deal. NONONO!!! There are no matts and you just need a thin frame so it is not difficult to frame yourself.
I love it and people are fascinated by how old it is and all the cool old names of places we live.
The space over the TV looks much better!

I like! I love seeing how people are using old...and new...maps in decorating. I particularly love the ones used to decorate table tops and end tables.

I love maps also. To me they are beautiful pieces of art, especially the old ones. Now If it was an original I would not destroy it. If you have any map art post it I would love to see it
