I had an exciting thrift shopping day yesterday!! I picked up this William and Mary Style China Cabinet.

It's in great shape - almost too good to paint - I'd like to hit it with some stain and wax it with AS clear wax and see if it sells without painting. Two questions.......There are two small areas with the veneer chipped off. I've used wood filler in the past it does not take stain - will plastic wood stain to a nice match? They sell it in colors I could get dark walnut. Next question.....If I decide to paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint after waxing it will I need to prep it? Or, instead of wax I could probably just use the dark Old English. Opinions?

I can't offer much help, as I haven't used either product, but maybe if you post a photo of this new cabinet, other folks could help you more.

Well I just got back from an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Workshop. YES, if I wax, stain or oil the piece first then decide to paint I don't have to prep at all.....Love Love Love chalk paint.

Donna..I have had some good results "patching" veneer with more veneer. To make the repair easier I will cut the Hole into a more usable shape...like a triangle or rect. Then the "patch" can be fitted to match this shape. The patch gets, glued in place, then stained to match...from there you can top coat. I have not used chalk paint, at least not yet, but in using other paints wax contaminate can lead to bubbling...to reduce this effect a "wipe down" with thinner can help with removing wax residue...its a minor step, and will help

Ohh Donna! that is a beautiful piece! I have used ASCP but I didn't really like either of the colors I used. :( I can't wait to see what you do with this piece!

The plan is ASCP - Duck Egg blue on the inside and the inside of the drawer and Old White on the body. I'm so excited about this piece. KMS - I knew you would have great advice I'm actually going to try this even though a bit of putty would work before paint. Great practice!! Thank you.

Like KMS I have not used the chaulk paint myself. But, like he said, normally you want to remove as much wax and such as possible if you are going to paint. I wouldn't use Old English for that matter either.
