I have a rolling cart I use in the kitchen daily. It has a stainless steel top, which I don't like. I am thinking of ways to change it.

Hello! You sure can paint it. You'll need to scour the surface first and then use a bonding primer or etching primer.

How about making a 'drop over' top out of reclaimed wood, perhaps from pallets? Or use new wood if you prefer. Make shallow sides, slightly bigger than the actual top so it sits over it. I am planning something similar for a glass topped garden table, its round at the moment but I am going to make it square. I can't give you any details of how to actually do this, sorry, I'm just going to make it up as I go along!

Personally since it is in the kitchen, I would install a butcher block on top. With this done, I could use it as a work station and for cutting as needed.

They have many different color and patterens of self adhesive contact vinyl rolls that would stick nicely on that surface it is cheap and easily removed if damaged or wanting to change for the seanon or just a new design.

I have the same thing and what I did was bought glass tiles for the center and added white ceramic tiles (4"x4") around then grouted just as you would do a back splash I absolutely love it! I can cut on it and put hot pans on it without worry.
