Hollow Ice cubes

Bought used Refrigerator. 2 year old ice maker. Half moon cubes, getting lots of hollow ice cubes. What causes that and how can I resolve this?

I believe this is typically a problem of not enough water coming into the freezer. Try replacing the water valves to clear out debris and return to the water pressure you need for full cubes.

Depending on the ice maker system. Many have timers that turn on the water for a set amount of time. If the timer is off or as Steve suggested if the water is not entering into the ice maker fast enough you will only get a shell of a ice cube. Check to see that there are no pinched water lines, That the valve that connects the water line to the main pipe is open all the way. Which is very common, and if you have a filter system, be sure to check that its not clogged and properly inserted in the device that holds it.

If what Steve G or W E suggested provides no relief, go to the bottom of the fridge. There is a regulator valve there that can be removed. Looking it over WON'T tell you it's working or NOT working. You must replace that part which is readily available at most appliance parts stores or from the after-market provider suggested by your fridge manufacturer. I've moved a lot and in the last 18 years and I've had three fridges who's ice maker problem was fixed by changing out that same part.

Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question because I have just bought a new 20 ft hose and will respond when installed. THANK YOU... Ron

Um, Ron... adding twenty feet of that tubing will likely add an additional arsenal of potential problems for you, especially if it's the plastic tubing. 1) There's a greater area for air to be trapped. 2) Weaving up down around and back increases potential for kinking. 3) It's hard to put the squeeze on plastic tubing to prevent/stop leaks. Suggestion for long runs of tubing: Use copper. A little more expensive but with the proper fittings, it will last a long time so you'll love your ice maker a long time!

Personally I think its the saddle tap on the water pipe that is causing this issue. Those valves when turned on tend to twist slightly off the center point where they puncture the pipe causing the rubber seal to partly block the opening. This is why you should consider a solder in type of valve with reducing fitting to fit the water supply pipe.

Good thinking, Woodbridge. Dump any that puncture type fitting into the main water source and use a valve. Oh and it would also give Ron another safe place to shut off the water if something should burst along the length of the tubing used.

I replaced copper with 10 ft of steel reinforced tubing and am now getting nice ice cubes. Thank You..Ron

When my ice cubes begin to "shrink", I change my water filter in fridge and that does the trick.

Run vinegar thru the lines, a couple of times, flush with water until vinegar taste is gone. There may be nasty algae blocking the line. Once you get that out, the line will be clean and clear, and regular ice cubes should appear again.
