I have one of those cheap, mdf TV stands that I want to do something with, but at a loss. It looks similar to this...http://welhome.en.alibaba.com/productshowimg/243711950-209339508/F9102_MDF_TV_Stand.html
Any ideas?

Definitely paint it, choose a colour that will compliment the colours in your room - I think an oil based or acrylic paint will be best to use.. Consider distressing if you like that look. You may even want to remove the middle shelf to enlarge the opening. You could find some decorative baskets for the bottom shelf to store items in it - magazines, books etc. or if used in a hallway perhaps scarves, gloves etc. Could also be used in a guest room and the baskets to store towels, toiletries and the other for spare blanket - could even be placed at the end of a bed - have this type of thing at the end of a few of our beds. Please do post an update via this post with pics - looking forward to seeing it :)

I would spray paint it with a high-gloss paint in a colour that suits your room and taste. Silver would give it an industrial look, and black would look rather sophisticated, but that depends on the room. I would then add either castors or legs. You could use the 'risers' that are used for beds. They are generally about four inches tall and I think that would be about the right height for the stand. Here are some instructions on how to add the legs, if you choose to do so: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-4109183
