Our electric oven doesn't heat properly

Vicki

The temperature goes up & down on it's own. Rarely stays where its set. My husband installed a temperature sensor & it still doesn't work.

This may sound silly but how old is the unit and do you have the manufactures guide?

Sounds like your thermostat is history. It's a fairly cheap repair. Even cheaper if you have someone who could check it for you.

I am sorry to say because of the age of your unit I feel it is not worth a repair, It will cost you alot more for someone to fix it. This time of year most stores are offering great discounts on last years models. That is just my opinion,

Having a repair is much less expensive than buying a new appliance. Call a reputable appliance store it Sears...they will fix just about anything.

Believe it or not ,Mr. Sparkey has turned out to be our rescuers several times...once when heat stopped on New Year's Day...bill $105.00 (just a service call because a gumball had dropped down into the fan and stopped it...we heard a noise and turned off the unit so the motor did not get harmed) and then when my lifelong plumber was out of town when the sewer stopped up...yep, in our area they do sewers too. It turned out to be a early evening call and unstop and the bill was most reasonable! Electricity is something I don't let my guy get too involved in...it scares me! Ovens are 220 volts! It is not worth getting hurt over to try and repair an oven yourself unless you are proficient in knowledge of them!

Is it the burners or the oven ? If oven could be circut board control isn't working right. Is it a glass cook top or circular burners. Need more information for me to give answer. But I can tell you this. New glass cook tops don't and won't get as hot and say hot like the old burners did/ They go off and on so can't they due to the uneven heat. The glass just can't stay hot all the time or it will break. I must say I hate the new glass tops. Yes easy to clean but don't/ won't do the heat even like the only ones. You could set on say 3 and it would stay level 3 till you changed. Just thought I would pass this on just in case it is burners too.

Hi Vicki. I will say I disagree with a new replacement! With that said, replace your heating elements. Yes, both of them. It is very easy to do DIY too. Second, it sounds like you got a bad sensor. And that too does happen. Something else to consider, is have a local appliance repair do things that involve electrical pieces. Simply for warranty. If you take back your sensor it will not be replaced for free. They will "question" the validity of installer and say you damaged it, improper installation, etc. Then recalibrate your oven. Then all will be right with your oven!

Even with your stove being 10 years old, there could be a computer chip issue, so I would recommend calling a certified repair person for the maker of your stove. Depending on what the issue(s) are with the stove, you can then decide whether to repair or replace the stove. You also may want to go on line to the manufacturer website and see what they may have regarding this issue, and if there is a phone number you can call for help.

We are probably going to replace the stove. Don't want to put any more money in it.

Vicki said it was her oven.....My DIL had the same trouble you are having and they did get a new stove. I know my stove is older than hers and from the start it has been about 5 degrees lower than it should be...... I always add a few minutes to the baking time. Like you, Vicki if my stove goes out....will probably be replaced. It is a smooth top and I love it...I was told that the life of a dishwasher is 5 to 7 years and on a flat screen TV 5 years.....guess they don't make appliances to last any more.

My oven was on the fritz once, then sizzled and died. I ordered a new heating element online, replaced it, and it's been fine ever since. My oven was original to the house, back in the 70s. It's worth a try, cheaper than a new stove.

You might just need a new heating element for your oven. I know mine has done that and all I did was replace h element. works great. Not expensive.
