Nell, I am there are plenty of folks here to give you great advice on how to begin the transformation! Would it be possible for you to post a few picture of your home so that we can see what you see?

When I think "open", I think of walls coming down. When I think of walls coming down I think of the house coming down around me... YIKES! If you're serious about opening up some areas, remember the most important rule of home ownership... KNOW which of your walls are LOAD-BEARING. Once you have that nailed... let your imagination run wild, Nell! Oh, and get that daughter involved right away (tell her you just bought a 4 pound sledge hammer and your intent on using it).
