recover with pretty decorator fabric right on top of the vinyl. Can you access where you can staple gun it?

Recover with outdoor fabric as it is more durable for areas where there may be spills and little hands.

I know this is going to sound crazy but I have spray painted vinyl before and it looks great! Spray paint is oil based so it is very durable and it will not come off on your clothes at all. The secret is to clean with TSP cleaner very well and let dry. Sand with 180 grit sand paper and then clean again. Tape off anything you do not want sprayed or if it can be removed from the area, even better. Then spray with several light coats instead of less heavy ones. I would use a satin finish. Worth a try and if you don't like it, you can always recover with fabric.
