We installed a pellet stove where electric heat had been used previously. We did the install ourselves and got a nice tax credit.. Total cost was around $2500. Our electric bill went from $350-$400 per month down to $100. Pellets cost us about $100/month. So that is about $150-$200 savings a month. This house is at about 8500 ft elevation so we need heat ALL YEAR as nights in the summer get down to 55 most of the time. Will take a little over a year to pay off, and then we have about $2000/year savings.

The most scientific and definitive way to answer your question is to have an energy audit done on your house. A good auditor will test the house for energy fitness and review your energy usage (bills and habits) to estimate what savings you can expect from various upgrades.
