Home Office Makeover
I have always wanted to have a library / home office with built-in bookshelves, a comfortable place to read and a desk. I finally got my wish by converting a small uninspired bedroom in my house!
As with all of the rooms in my house, the original room was beige and pretty boring! It did have a nice big window, but that was pretty much it's only saving grace.
Of course, in order to have a "library", I needed lots of books. Because this room was so small, there were limited options for where the bookshelves could go. I ended up building them around the closet and moving the closet doors out to match the edge of the bookshelves. I even ended up with a bigger closet...more storage!
As you've probably noticed, I went with black paint in the room. I figured a small room is always going to be small, and I liked the look of those dark paneled libraries you see in the movies. I didn't actually want wood paneling, so I created "panels" using inexpensive moulding. Hanging the gold patterned wallpaper added some extra shine to the black room.
I found this black and gold striped fabric which my mother made into curtains for me. They are fairly simple panels on each side with a layered valance across the top. We installed them above and to the sides of the window so that the curtains didn't block the light from the window.
As always, I had to do something with the ceiling...to cover the popcorn, I installed faux tin ceiling tiles painted black and added a semi-flush mount chandelier (the ceilings are only 8 feet high so a regular chandelier was out of the question).
I added a desk and some accessories...and voila...my library / home office was done.
The new version of the room looks so much better than the original beige!
