Exterior shutters - what should I do?!?

Although I am not on the coast, my new home has a South Carolina low country feel. It's brick with a steep roof and a large front porch with wrought iron railing. The windows on the porch have transoms above. My contractor is asking if I want one set of shutters on each window or, if I want a small set of shutters for the transoms, meaning each window would have a shutter on each side of the main window and a shutter on each side of the transom, 4 per window. Also he's asking if I want shutter hardware. Any ideas? Thanks!

Without seeing a photo thats kind of a hard question to answer. My next thought is do you like shutters? Will it complete the look of your home? It truly is up to you with the look your trying to accomplish.

Hi Bren If your windows are protected under the cover of your porch, I wouldn't see where you would necessarily need shutters. Also you're not on the coast so the shutters wouldn't be functioning to protect your home in the event of a storm. I would not personally put shutter on transoms as they are a style used more for ventilation and are above the actual window. It seems like that may look odd. If you have the chance, drive around your area and see what other homes have a similar style to yours and of those that do, consider how their shutters look. That might help make your decision. Best wishes!

I have a southern style brick home with large front porch and 3 sets of French doors with transoms over them. I found two option(neither of which have been installed yet. One company offered operable( functional for hurricane protection) that would only protect the doors, the transom covers were medal panels that would have to be installed before a storm, which was the draw back, but all the construction on shutters was metal(my preference) The other options I found was full shutters that covered covered both door and transom, kinda half moon shaped, but made made of some type of plastic, I don't really want plastic...so that's my problem. I suggest checking with several companies, there are more options available. This is what my home looks like, no shutters yet.

I love the look of shutters, but not if they will make the house look "cluttered". If they're useful in a storm, then put them where they would be most useful.
