A Dresser Makeover From Somewhat Quirky Design

Somewhat Quirky
by Somewhat Quirky
First I had to clean it up with mineral spirits. I was hoping that it would clean off the sticky, furry stuff off of the top. But it did not. So I stripped it with Jasco Varnish and Stain Remover.
Then I sanded it I stained it by using Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I like staining with colored waxes. The process is so incredibly easy. The finish is incredibly durable, the colors subtle, and it just glows.
The drawers were a little unstable - the bottom kept slipping out of the side and back grooves. I took them apart and glued them back together.
I painted the body with General Finishes newest paint - a line of chalky finishes. This line has several gorgeous blues in it.
I love it when dressers have these batons.
I only replaced the wooden knobs then painted over the metal handles. I'm not sure I will stick with this hardware or not. I'll have to stare at it for a while.
I sanded the whole piece with 220 sand paper and distressed it lightly. I wanted the edges to be distressed to highlight the architecture of the piece. The whole thing was waxed with Annie Sloan Soft Wax then waxed again with Annie Sloan Dark Wax.
This color is gorgeous. It looked very periwinkle in the can so I was curious how it would end up. The un-waxed color was almost royal blue. The General Finishes Chalky Finish Paint was very easy to work with. If you don't like a wax finish, they have a wide variety of excellent furniture finishes that work well with painted finishes.
It turned out beautifully. This dresser was my submission to the January Fab Furniture Flippin contest. The theme for January was "A Fresh Start" and was sponsored by General Finishes. Each participant received one can of Chalky Finish Paint to complete their project. For more information on the process or color please read the blog post listed below. That may answer your question.
