Is it a good idea to paint a garage floor?

It provides a nice 'finished look'. Be sure to use a degreaser for any oil spots etc before painting!

YES. It prevents grease and dirt from staining the concrete and makes cleaning the floor a breeze! I have used and highly recommend a 2 part epoxy garage floor paint kit sold in all home improvement super stores.

It also looks great upon resale.

The epoxy finishes are pretty trick looking , plus you can add no skid type materials to make them safer when wet.

Clean up is much easier. I especially like the floor with color flakes spread on top. Nice look.

just remember that when you pull in the car on a finished floor the HOT tires will heat up the part of the floor where the tires sit & cool off. plus the finish will peel after some time, & you may have to do it again

Yep, once you paint you will have to do it again. Good point on the tires, never thought of that.

Sure, they look gerat, but hot tires may peal the paint up in those spots.

Perhaps four cheap throw rugs or coverings where your tires rest everyday.

In addition to my recommendation in the earlier post, make sure to get a kit with the anti-slip flakes... otherwise a wet painted floor can have you skating.

Great insight Virginia! I like the idea of the mats for the tires also, James! You might also consider hanging a tennis ball from the ceiling to guide your parking- it's worked for my grandma for years!

Staining concrete floors, rather than painting, is the way to go. Paint just does not adhere properly and will peel off. Floor may need to be etched with muriatic acid or stain mfg's pre-treatment first, then stain made for concrete will not peel or chip off. Look at some brands like H&C ( now owned by Sherwin-Williams). Traction will not be an issue with stain. Easy DIY project and good to do on a warm dry day so it will dry faster. ...»

And this grandma has a tennis ball hanging from her garage ceiling too. Much cheaper than other gadgets.

Does stain come in a variety of colors? Does it have traction chips or does it need it.

Springy Curb feelers on the wall help guide my wife into her garage space.

Yes, there are various colors. I used a light grey on mine. The stain does not need any kind of chips for traction. It looks like paint but it is stain. We painted the floor of the garage at a previous house & that was a big mistake!

Mine still looks good after maybe 10 years, except where I dropped furniture stain during one of my refinishing project - yeah I know, I should have used a dropcloth or at least some cardboard ...»

under the funriture - but too late now. Floor really does clean fairly well without being sealed, but maybe a sealer would have been a good idea in my workshop area.

Stain or epoxy will do a good job. The trick is in the prep. As Janice said you need to etch the floor 1st.

And as to color there are many colors to pic from.
