What kind of stone is fireproof?

I see lots of posts from people that make fire pits from typical landscape stones that can be purchased at home supply stores. Will these stones stand up to the high temperatures and direct contact with fire? I'm concerned that they will eventually crack.

and you would be correct ...it would take a while depending on the size of fire..but they have spefial fireproof paint you can coat the fire side with to eliminate the problem.

Most homemade fire pits I have seen are rings or squares that are fairly large and the fire is built inside the area. I'm sure the stone/block/bricks get hot but they're far enough away from the flame that I can't imagine the stones would get hot enough to break. I always understood the outer brick ring was to contain the fire and create a barrier so people don't accidentally walk into it. Double check at your big box home improvement store I'm sure they know which block can be used for fires and which ones aren't recommended.

You build the outer section...the decorative parts with those stones. Then use a metal fire bowl or buy fire brick...ask at your home improvement store..line the inside with that. Or as suggested above use a high temp paint...I found one that withstands 1500Ā° I bet that would do it to!
